If your not networked to any other computer, goto control panel then to network and remove Client for MS networking!

hope this helps

all u do is:

put a fresh username in the box, and leave the passowrd blank.. i had this problem for weeks once. The only way i fixed is was creating a new profile without a password.

Yes, but if your not networked there is NO point in having 'Client for MS networking' Installed. Plus its a very ez way for a hacker to access your computer. You can read more about this subject @ www.grc.com

Unfortunately, that is a common problem with some Microsoft products. Reinstall your operating system. You won't lose any of your data. It'll just role over your current system. After you reinstall, when it asks your for a username and password, don't put one in. Just bypass it. That should solve your problem.

When prompted leave the password box blank and click ok and it shouldn't appear again. If it does put in the username but leave the password blank and click ok and it shouldn't appear again. I forget which method it is.

Hi Jenni,

If you are not using it, you don't need it activated and if you are on a network that needs it , you should have some sort of 'firewall'program .

Client for networking can allow other computers to access yours when it is connected to a network and the internet is a network that all kinds of people have access to. Most of them are not interested in accessing your computer, don't know that it is possible or don't know how, but you never know for sure.
Bob

Hi Chris,
I have never used a password and never seen the screen asking for it but there has to be a setting somewhere [probably in the registry ] that is preventing the normal fixes that you have tried from working.

I don't have any experience with it but I am sure someone here knows where to look.

If no one replies with a suggestion , I will do some looking when I get the time.

Thanks Bob, I really appreciate the help, this problem is not really killing me, but it sure is annoying, letting win98 get the best of me, I guess I'm just that way.

Don't know why its not working, but see
How to Prevent a Windows 95/98 Logon Prompt at Startup

If the above failes, then go to the following registry key:

hkey_local_machine\software\microsoft\windows\current version\network\real mode net\autologon

Change the value from "01 00 00 00" to "00 00 00 00". That will eliminate your logon screen completely. However, make a note of that key, because if you ever want it back, you'll have to change it again.

There you go Chris. I bet you have got enough info to fix it now.

I checked to see if I was going to have to budget some study time on this but let us know if you get it or if you need more help.
Maybe I can just save this thread for reference for the next time the problem comes up. Thanks, Hairy and Mulder.

Bob
