I have windows 98 OS, and every time I select folder options
in the "view" column, or internet options in the "tools"
column I get a Restriction message which says."This operation has been cancelled due to restrictions in effect on this computer. Please contact your system administrator."
It doesn't matter what I'm in, Internet Explorer,Recycle Bin, etc, I get the same message. Anyone have any suggestions ?
Note: I can go to Start, then Settings, then Folder Options, and everything acts normal. The problem seems to be in everything else. Thanks

How long has this problem been occurring? If it's been 5 days or less and you restart the PC each day, try this,

Start>Shutdown>Restart in MSDOS mode. At an MSDOS prompt key in the following and press enter

scanreg /restore

Now use the up/down arrow keys to highlight a registry dated the day of or prior to the problem first occurring.

Let us know what happens.

BTW, just so your ware of this. If you installed any software or hardware in the last 5 days, you'll need to reinstall it or them after the registry restore.

And one other thing, if you get to the scanreg screen and see old registry backups that are more than 5 days old, don't restore them. Let us know first.

Try this, Start>Run, key in Regedit and press enter. Click on Edit>Find, key in Restrictions and click on "Find Now". What's it find? If it finds something, in the bottom bar of the window, you see a path listed, for example, "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft ......". Post the path to a reply here. Then press F3 to continue searching for more hits on Restrictions and post those paths, too.

And do this, Start>Settings>FolderOptions>View. Be sure "Show All Files" is selected. If not, select it and click on Apply. Now do this, Start>Find>Files, key in Poledit* and press enter. Does it find anything?

OK Bryan, here's what I got.
MyComputer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\InternetExplorer\R estrictions
In the right hand column
Name Data
ab [Default] [value not set]
ab NoBrowserOptions "1"

Pressing F3 gave no more results. I hope this helps.
Thanks
Marvin

Marvin, in case Bryan's hit the sack, you hit paydirt -- just right click on that NoBrowserOptions entry in the right hand pane and delete it. You'll be back in business. (
A reboot may be needed afterwards..)

Hey Gang!!!!!!!!!
That did it!!!!!!
I'm really thankful that I found this site.{Bookmarked it}
And I can't tell you how grateful I am. If you're ever on a Continental Airlines flight, stick your head in the cockpit and see if I'm there. The drinks are on me.
