Greetings from the UK!

My caption buttons, check boxes, radio buttons, scroll bar buttons etc.. no longer have the correct symbols on them, on any application within windows.

For instance, the 'close application' button, in the top right corner of the screen, has a small square, instead of a 'X'. Check boxes have a strange symbol, instead of a tick that you can check on or off.

I'm running Windows 98se from a laptop.

Is there an easy fix for this?

have you runan updated virus scan?

and try the repair function of ie,
and look for tweak has a repair icon tab once u install it

I seen this in the past but can't remember exactly what caused it. I'll keep looking or maybe someone else will remember.

In the meantime, Mark's suggestions are good ones. Please go <a href=http://housecall.antivirus.com/pc_housecall/> here</a> and run a free online virus scan to be sure your clean. Let us know the results and we'll go from there.

And I'd also run Microsofts Tweakui and run a repair of the Fonts like Mark suggested. If you don't have Tweakui then get it <a href=http://www.microsoft.com/ntworkstation/downloads/PowerToys/Networking/NTTweakUI.asp> here </a>. Don't be fooled by the header on that page. That version of Tweakui is for W95/98 and Windows ME, too. Be sure to read the install instructions. Basically your going to right click on Tweakui.inf and select Install. Once it's installed goto the ControlPanel and click on the Tweakui icon. Click on the "Repair" tab. Now click on the dropdown box and select "Repair Fonts".

And to repair IE like Mark suggested click on Start>Settings>CP>Add/RemovePrograms. Double left click on "Microsoft Internet Explorer X.0 and Internet Tools". A menu will appear. Take the option for "Repair".

Let us know what happens.

<font face="comic sans ms" color="#577ac6">If it's of any help to you, I remember that it's the Marlett TrueType font that's used in Windows for Minimize and Maximize buttons and the like.
So I searched, and found <a href="http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;q134861">Description of and Troubleshooting the Marlett TrueType Font (Q134861)</a>.
Although the article refers to Win95, most of the information is still useful.

And just for fun, you can learn more than you ever really wanted to know about <a href="http://www.microsoft.com/typography/default.asp">Microsoft Typography</a>, perhaps specifically, the <a href="http://www.microsoft.com/typography/fonts/Product.asp?PID=86">Fonts supplied with Windows 98 SE</a>.</font>

Signature, thanks, I think your correct and it is a problem with the Marlett font. That Microsoft article would also apply to W98 and should fix it.

John, I'm such a packrat - I add everything I come across into my Favorites folder.
I can't seem to help myself - it's all so interesting, and I just might need it later, for one reason or another.
So, if the Internet ever loses all it's information in some terrible tragedy - not to worry - I'll have a backup... </font>

Thanks for the help folks. You're right it was the Martlett font which had become corrupted.
