See the following links. It would seem this is NOT a patch to apply.

I thought the Intel bus master drivers worked on a Via chipset. I guess you just can’t change them that way.

I just fixed a couple of those for friends (one of em was a bit stubborn ). It is a bit strange that they would try to apply the intelata stuff to 440 bx's Not a good scenario for those who aren't comfortable removing the new cat file and cutting the registry to shreds as well as removing inf files !

It's probably ok for those who are running 815 chipsets?

-- Edit --
In these cases the uninstall wizard from msinfo32 seemed to give some trouble - probably from attempts at fixes before i saw them - or perhaps the originals weren't in correctly before the update.

I used this update on a PC I just put together using a Tyan S1894 Motherboard with Intel's 440BX chipset. It took out my CD-ROM, serial ports, parallel port and USB.
I was able to get the correct drivers from tyan's website, which fixed the problem. In fact, I had put those drivers in first, then went to Windows Update (Fresh OS install, was upgrading security info and such) and saw it. Little did I realize the problems M$ caused. I was able to re-run the Tyan drivers and get my peripherals back with no problems.

that driver took out my CDrom and I had exclamation marks on my primary and secondary IDE drivers. I fixed it all by upgrading the win98se to winXP pro. I'm happy again!

John Sparkman If you haven't already - I'd also run the removal tool (it can be slow so be patient with it and probably will have to be done twice with a reboot in between)

Start > Run (type msinfo32.exe) > OK and choose Update Wizard Uninstall from the Tools menu.

Then check to see that the drivers still look OK.

MS Updates at 10:40 Eastern Time is still offering this SNAFU and as bad as we feel for falling for it, hows about the avarage user. This Intel driver that likes Via chipsets is very easy to remove, if they get the info before they start clicking and crashing. There is a very Critical update for IE6 users at MS Updates, go get it now. I'm not even sure MS knows about this problem they created. Did you write them I didn't. I checked the Intel site and did not find anything about this, of course why would they, there are no Intel drivers that I need with an AMD VIA system. Is there some way to alert everyone with Tech Guy about this? I've been over at Lurk Here and there getting ready for some real basket cases to stat coming at any time now. IMM what kind of trouble did you run into with your cases? BrianF what's your take on this mixup at MS? I have run into some folks that just downloaded the VIA 4 in 1 Service packs but not everyone did of course. I know MS needs to take this off now, but you know who will be helping the people get there systems back inorder, and it's not going to be MS! Marturo

Thanks for your response
Lost my CDROM, .pwl took a hike on every reboot, driver's ceased to be recognized by O/S (but were still loaded), modem data loaded but hardware not recognized; there's more.......

Some folks report having to reformat (the Intel load in question was a component for the H/D)

I did try email but couldn't get it through. Wound up paying for the phone call. MS tech didn't know what I was referring to at the beginning of my call; by the end, his co-techs were so busy w/calls for help they had called in reinforcements.

I'm still working to recover a couple drives; just call me a sucker for an update!
