Dear All

I am dual-booting a computer attached to an NT network with NT Workstation 4.0 SP5 and Windows 2000 RC2 (both Japanese versions incidentally although I can't see that that is the problem).

Anyway, the problem I am having is this. If I am using Windows NT on the network and then I reboot (or shut down) and try to go into Windows 2000, I am told that my computer does not have an account in the domain. I then have to log on to the workstation, move the computer account from domain to workgroup, reboot, log on to the workgroup, change the computer account back on to the domain (adding the computer account back in) and reboot again. I can then use the computer on the domain.

If I shut down and log back on to Windows 2000 again there is no problem, but if I want to log on to NT again, I have to repeat the above process (which is quite time-consuming).

Any suggestions gratefully received.

Has the network admin set the same permissions for your log on name(s). Ie. are you using the same log on name for each? I don't know but I will see what I can turn up.
I would think you would treat the dual boot as two seperate computers, but not sure. Are you setup for roaming? It kinda sounds like the server still sees your previous log on connection at the NT computer. Can you try two different log on names keeping you in your same groups, and under the same user groups. this way you could by pass this problem if it actually is the problem.
Maybe? perhaps worth a try? You would need to ask the admin, but I think it might work.

It is very important that the computer's name is different in NT4 and W2K. If they are the same, then problems like this arise.

If they are not different, then change the name under W2K.

You've got yourself another satisfied customer. That did the trick nicely.

Out of curiosity, I'd be interested to know the reason for this. Is the computer account somehow linked to the SID on that machine (or, in this case, installation of NT/2000)?

It is a combination of the SID, the computer name, a random number generated and some other factors. I can not remember where I saw that the names should be different, but it stuck in the memory banks....

Glad it came out when it could be of most use.... Now if only the fact that I knew that Reykjavik is the capital of Iceland would hold me in better stead. I mean, how many trival pursuit games do I need to play before I get asked that question???
