Running slower and slower
Dear Tech gods,
My computer, a Dell Dimension 3000, using Windows XP Home Edition, an Intel (R) Celeron (R) CPU 2.40GHz processor with 512 MB of RAM and the 5.1.2600 operating system is getting to be really slow and strange. Sometimes the internet shuts off. Programs take forever to load. Takes a long time to boot up. I have next to no computer knowledge. I don't really have any start up applications except Webroot Spy Sweeper. I also had Adaware but it has vanished somehow. I got the idea that HijakThis is a popular way of getting support, and I thought I would try it out, so I have here the file of what it came up with yesterday. There registry booster and speedupmyPC are just the free trial versions that don't really do anything, so I will get rid of them unless you guys think it is worth buying them. Please let me know if there is something that has infested my computer which I can remove. Also, if there is some sort of thing I can buy or download that can keep my computer clean, that would be greatly appreciated too. Many many thanks in advance.

you have uninstalled mcaffe & it has set a clean up of left overs to run at every boot
Run hijackthis, put a tick in the box beside these entries listed below and ONLY these entries, double check to make sure, then make sure all browser & email windows are closed and press fix checked

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Cleanup] "C:\DOCUME~1\Alan\LOCALS~1\Temp\2006820112646_mcappins.exe" /v=3 /cleanup

then
Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only

Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

If you use Firefox browser

Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.

If you use Opera browser

Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.

Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

reboot & tell us how it is and if any improvement

Howdy,
I did as you suggested. To be honest, there really isn't any improvement yet. I will try it for a few days and see if I notice any. Also, when I went to restart the computer it kind of froze on the the "computer is shutting down" page and never really shut down. I had to push the ol' power button. To be fair this has happened in the past. Also, when I did start it back up it said things like "your computer might be at risk because symantec is turned off" but I don't think it is. And when I double clicked on firefox it took nearly 3 minutes before the window opened. Oh, and firefox didn't save the passwords even though I told it not to erase them. But that is really not a big deal at all.
any ideas?
thanks again! Paulina

lets see what this shows
  • Download WinPFind
  • Right Click the Zip Folder and Select "Extract All"
  • Extract it somewhere you will remember like the Desktop
  • Dont do anything with it yet!

Reboot into Safe Mode
Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

Doubleclick WinPFind.exe[list][*]Click " Configure Scan Options"[*]Select " Run Add ONs" and then select ALL the options in the box below it, Press Apply [*]Now Click "Start Scan"[*]It will scan the entire System, so please be patient![*]Once the Scan is Complete
  • Reboot back to Normal Mode!
  • Go to the WinPFind folder
  • Locate WinPFind.txt
  • Place those results in the next post!. It will be too big to post so you will need to attach it to your reply

I hope I did it right. When I was in safe mode, I couldn't read half of the options on the scan options as they were cut off. I have attached the file.
Thank you.

I can't see anything obvious in teh wpfind log

If symantec isn't starting or a warning coming up taht it isn't it sounds like either one of the registry cleaners have removed something they shouldn't or a a trojan/virus/worm is attacking symantec

lets see what this shows

Click here to download Dr.Web CureIt and save it to your desktop.
  • Doubleclick the drweb-cureit.exe file and allow to run the express scan
  • This will scan the files currently running in memory and when something is found, click the yes button when it asks you if you want to cure it. This is only a short scan.
  • Once the short scan has finished, mark the drives that you want to scan.
  • Select all drives. A red dot shows which drives have been chosen.
  • Click the green arrow at the right, and the scan will start.
  • Click 'Yes to all' if it asks if you want to cure/move the file.
  • When the scan has finished, look if you can click next icon next to the files found:
  • If so, click it and then click the next icon right below and select Move incurable as you'll see in next image:
  • This will move it to the %userprofile%\DoctorWeb\quarantaine-folder if it can't be cured. (this in case if we need samples)
  • After selecting, in the Dr.Web CureIt menu on top, click file and choose save report list
  • Save the report to your desktop. The report will be called DrWeb.csv
  • Close Dr.Web Cureit.
  • Reboot your computer!! Because it could be possible that files in use will be moved/deleted during reboot.
  • After reboot, post the contents of the log from Dr.Web you saved previously in your next reply along with a new HijackThis log.

Ok,

To run DrWeb I had to turn off spy sweeper cause it kept stalling on something there. Here are the files.
