Recently when I click a link on an e mail, it tries to open it with excel which it should not do, and, does not work.
It seems to do this by default and I do not get an option to open with another program.
Obviously excel is not the program to open these applications, how can I get this back to normal? | | Member with 37 posts. | | Join Date: Jul 2005 Location: Edinburgh, Scotland Experience: Advanced | | Hi there,
Which version of Windows are you using? The following advice might be slightly different depending on if it is Win 98, 2000, ME, or XP! This is according to XP:
Try going to My Computer --> Control Panel --> Internet Options. Then click on the Programs tab and look to see which program is listed in the Email box. Try changing or resetting it to your email application.
Let me know if this helps any!

I am running XP Home.
If I click a link on a newsletter on an e mail ,the computer tries to open whatever it is with excel.
I have tried everything I know is logical...or maybe not.

Is it one type of link in all, say, newsletters from that sender? Contact the sender (if you can) and ask how they're saving the file...this might not be a problem on your end.

Also, when you say "link," do you mean an attached file or a hyperlink?

It seems to be from various senders. From big corporations to small mailouts.
The way round it is to C&P into my browser, but that is very boring... | | Distinguished Member with 2,994 posts. | | Join Date: Aug 2005 Experience: Advanced | | Outlook 2000?
This might be a weird request, but could you paste a sample hyperlink in this thread? If it's pretty long you might want to put it in code tags so it doesn't get truncated.
I'd also like to know, does it happen with different file types or just one type (e.g., only .asp pages open in Excel, or both .html and .php pages, etc.)?
Have you tried using Detect and Repair... from Outlook's Help menu?

And you click on the link in the email text (the web address) and it launches Excel instead of your web browser? | | Junior Member with 6 posts. | | Join Date: Sep 2005 Experience: Intermediate | | yes thats right... #11 | So, just to get this straight:
Every hyperlink in all of your emails, regardless of its extension, opens an instance of Excel rather than your default browser. Is there any error message when it tries to load the page? Could you post a screenshot? | | Junior Member with 6 posts. | | Join Date: Sep 2005 Experience: Intermediate |

#12 | Hi there
There is no error message. It just tries to load everything in excel.
I do not know how to post a screen shot. | | Distinguished Member with 2,994 posts. | | Join Date: Aug 2005 Experience: Advanced |

#13 | To post a screenshot of what's going on: - First, do whatever you do to create the problem (e.g., try to open an email hyperlink).
- When the Excel window opens, make sure it is active. The Title Bar will be blue rather than gray.
- Locate the Print Screen (or Print Scrn) button on your keyboard. If you use a standard 101/102-key keyboard, it will be immediately to the right of the function keys.
- With the Excel window active in the state of trying to load a hyperlink, press Ctrl+Print Screen. You might see the screen flash for just a second, or the mouse pointer might change to an hourglass. Otherwise you won't notice any event.
- Open an instance of Microsoft Paint (Start-->Programs-->Accesories-->Paint). In the Paint window, from the menu select Edit-->Paste. You should see a screenshot of the Excel window.
- From the menu select File-->Save.
- In the Save As window, type Sample.jpg in the File name field. Select JPEG File Interchange Format (*.jpg,*.jpeg) from the Save as type drop-down list. Click Save.
- Then, when you post a reply using the Post Reply button in this thread, scroll down a little. Just below the Reply to Thread frame (where you type your post) there is an Additional Options frame.
- In the Additional Options frame click Manage Attachments. A mini-browser window will open. In that window, click Browse.... Locate and select Sample.jpg. Click OK. In the mini-browser window click Upload. Once the file has opened click Close this window.
- In the main browser window, type your post and click Submit Reply.

#14 | Hi w.j.cooper
Have you been able to resolve this problem? Control Panel > Internet Options > Programs tab
Click the Reset Web Settings button Apply, OK, to save and close.
Check these file types:
Open My Computer or Windows Explorer: Tools > Folder Options > File types tab,
check under each of these file types to see if their settings show the following: - URL:File Transfer Protocol
"C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe" %1 - URL:Gopher Protocol
"C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe" -nohome - URL:HyperText Transfer Protocol
"C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe" -nohome - URL:HyperText Transfer Protocol with Privacy
"C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe" -nohome
Check each Registered File Type:
Click Advanced,
Click on the action: Open,
Click Edit
Look in the: Application used to perform action: window to check your settings.
Let us know if that helps or not. | | Junior Member with 1 posts. | | |

#15 | I had a similar problem, only instead of opening Excel, it was trying to save the links as .exe files.
I followed the above steps and it cleared up the problem.
I found that in my case, it was because I was previously using Firefox as my web-browser, but when I uninstalled it, it didn't point back to IE when I started using that again.
All fixed now though | THIS THREAD HAS EXPIRED.
