Thanks to HughJanus and Rollin Rog for their suggestions. I think Hugh hit the nail about Norton. I didn't have any error messages until a few months ago when I renewed my virus subscription. I also have iTunes and Quicktime, so they could be the culprits also. I'll have to try the suggestions - I can't even get the error message to go away so I tuck it down into the corner of my screen. Thanks all!

I'm inclined to agree with abeluser that this may be a Windows update or related issue. The variety of programs and issues (eg. USB Printer) provoking this error which appear to be popping up (recently?) suggest something other than the specific programs themselves is at fault.

We just started getting this error on one of our machine shortly after reformatting a hard drive and reinstalling Windows XP SP2. It uses Kaspersky, not Norton. It does have a USB printer (HP 1012), but that printer was running on that machine for several years prior to the reinstall with no error.

The only reason I'm still hesitant to attribute the problem to a Windows update is that this thread appears to have started here on 14 April 2007. If it were caused by a Windows Update it would likely have been an April. But one would think we'd have had some confirmation from MS or the tech journals I follow by now. So I'm still puzzled.

If I find anything more I'll post it.

I have the same problem, but have never used/installed/uninstalled Norton Anti-Virus.

Removal of USB card reader 3 days ago fixed c0000013 problem at boot-up.I confirm suspicions that problem did not occur until after latest XP update a couple of weeks ago.

Just to throw a spanner in the works I have just received this error message while trying to enter a backup path in TurboCash, an open source accounts package - on a Windows XP Pro machine. wht is mor it added a Parameter of 75b6bf9c - three times - in the message

Any more thoughts?

I see we are all suffering with it

It started for me after loading ne wsoftware from HP for a printer . The software need MS net to work why who knows. ANyway I get an update message from MS for a servce pack 1 for MS Net ( none reversibel !!)

Guess what since then i keep getting the infernal message after using real player and quicktime

From goggling the error message its seem sto crop up when any media software is used

Does anyone know what an exception actually is; is there is an 'official' list of exceptions like RFCs? What about the parameters, what are they? Programmers write these error messages, but why can't they have some human (non programmer everyday ordinary person) readable script attached.

Some error messages I have seen have a huge list of what I think are memory locations. Fine. They might be needed by the writer. What the do not do is help the computer operator to understand what has gone wrong, how to fix it and most importantly, how to prevent a re-occurrence of the problem. Oh, and while I am moaning, why can't we copy and paste the error message into a text reader of some sort so we can print it out to give to the 'technician' when they arrive?

Anyway, back to the beginning, is there a list of exceptions somewhere?

Not quite "Your file is corrupt" more like "you're file is corrupt because..."

I suppose the trouble is that mere mortals do not (can not) write programs.

I still don't know what an 'exception' really is though

I'm getting that same error and I don't have Norton anti-virus software on my computer so I don't think it has anything to do with that. I get the error when I try to sign into my HP printer software so I called HP and they couldnt even help. They said it sounded like some kind of memory problem & that I need to call Dell about my computer.

I've been having the same problem, I think I just fixed mine. I traced the problem to qttask.exe after searching this i found it tied to quick time. I deleted quick time and the problem is gone.

I too have tracked this vermon down to qttask.exe. I was unable to uninstall quick time until I first shut down this file thru msconfig - startup. after uninstall I returned to normal startup and my system appears to be running well. I was having sluggish problems in windows explorer and now all is well--I hope ;~)

I have been getting this error message but only when I click on the Backup button in DriveImage XML an open-source imaging program. I tried the applicable suggestions on the forum thus far and none worked in my situation (including uninstalling QuickTime).

The following, however, 'worked' for me. I put a disk in my zip drive before opening DriveImage XML and the message went away.

The drive image software obviously performs a quick scan across the drives to load information about each drive in the selection window and was reporting not seeing a disk in the zip drive.

I thought I would post this observation because, while it may not identify the underlying issue of what changed on all these boxes to cause the problem, it does seem clear why different users are reporting seeing this error thrown when running different pieces of software: each piece of software/process is probably running a disk identification routine.

Hope this helps someone.
