Office 2003/2007 crash on startup
Hi everybody,
I have this problem driving me nuts, and I just registered here in the hopes of finding some help. I have been reading pages upon pages of possible solutions on different forums, but non have worked for me so far.

Basically, my Office 2003 apps suddenly started crashing on startup. Whether I open the apps directly or try to open a .doc or .xls document, I will see the Word or Excel logo appear, then nothing.
The only way I can run them is in safe mode.

So far, here's what I've tried :
-Using the "Detect & Repair" option in Word
-Deleting all the templates (Normal.dot)
-Repairing from the installation cd
-Uninstalling and re-installing
-Clean uninstalling, including manually deleting installation folders, templates, etc. and all the registry keys that I could find that contained mentions of Office or Word
-Using a registry cleaner/fixer between uninstalling and re-installing

I also borrowed a copy of Office 2007 which I installed. -Crashes exactly the same way...

Now, I'm going crazy. Especially since I'm not at all fond of OpenOffice and hate having always to convert from their format to Office's, as I often have to work on different pcs.

What is there left to try ? A complete reformat just for that bug ?!!

I'd really appreciate some input.
Thanks in advance.

Ps- I'm on XP Pro.

Just thought I'd add :
Is it possible some service by a third party app is interfering ?

Unfortunately, I can't remember if this problem started after installing something or other.

Also, is there an Office 2003 uninstaller app ? (I know they have one for 97, but MS says it is not suitble for other versions.)

As opposed to what I said earlier, here is the solution : Convert, convert, convert to OpenOffice.

Sure, it's a bit of getting used to. But when you get down to it, only a few features require adapting (such as the spellcheck). Otherwise, you can also configure OpenOffice to save every document in *.doc format right from their creation, so as to avoid being unable to open them on other machines.

I shan't ever use a MS Office application again.

Hehe. Switched to Linux did you !?? I understand its frustrating, we got to know that a PC's environment is totally unique when you compare it with another. You can probably never have all the variables the same as another computer. As a result anything can go wrong. Its like saying this cyclist ran into my car , so am not ever gonna drive again.

But considering you are happy with Open Office lets look at ToParis's issue. Did you say the symptoms are the same !??

What antivirus program do you have on your computer? Have you tried cleanbooting the computer and then running the applications normally. Try this and see what happens. It could be an incompatibility that might have come up due to an update.

Well Krash, I hope you can help ToParIs.

But if all else fails, ToParIs, don't be afraid to try OpenOffice. « http://openoffice.org »
Only count on about 1 week of figuring out where some of the functions are located inside the menus, and getting used to the way the dictionaries and the spellcheck function work. (The vast majority of the functions are similar to MS Office's, so it's really not that alien.)

I'll keep watching this thread, so if you ever try OpenOffice and have questions, you can ask them here. I'll do my best to guide you.

In the meanwhile, good luck figuring out your bug.
