Solved: Strange Outlook behaviour
I have just started getting the attached error message when using Outlook 2007 on my XP Professional SP2 installation. On clicking OK I get a standard Application Error box and Outlook terminates.

The message appears under the following conditions ;

1. Any attempt to view a message (I can create messages fine)
2. Any attempt to activate the viewer panel when messages exist in the current folder. Viewer panel appears normally if currently selected folder empty.
3. Any attempt to create/view Calendar or task list entries.

Message appears to indicate that some security feature has been activated, but I haven't done so, nor can I find any option that would do this in the configuration settings. I have run virus and malware scans, both of which have come back clean. I have created a new .pst file and closed the current one without any effect I have not yet tried re-installing Outlook

My system is currently running Spyware Terminator and ESET Smart Security.

Has anyone come across this problem before or offer any suggestions as to what might be causing it?

Thanks

You should delete Spyware Terminator as running two antispyware programs that both have real-time protection at the same time doesn't work out in the end.

You could try disabling ESET Smart Security. To do this, right click on the tray icon, click Do not filter network traffic (Disable firewall), right click on the icon for the second time, and click Disable antivirus and antispyware protection. I also found this page.

Thanks for the reply Tacoman. I've followed your suggestions (and those in the article you mentioned), but the problem remains. The Reading Pane still won't open and the error message continues to appear.

That's odd, if you followed the Blocked ActiveX Controls guide and changed the registry value to 2 it should have worked. Put it at 2, then restart your computer, then try again. If it works, set it to 1 and restart again and see if everything is still working. If it is, leave it at that. If it isn't, I'm not really sure how safe allowing all ActiveX controls in Outlook would be. If that is the issue, you may want to reinstall.

SOLVED: Strange Outlook behaviour
Looks like the computer just needed to rest overnight.

I retried changing the registry settings this morning, and now can get the Reading Pane to remain available with the setting at either 2 or 1 (I am leaving it at 1). The errors have also gone. Great. I can use Outlook again.

Thanks VM for you help.
