transferring Lotus spreadsheets to Excel
I successfully copied my Lotus spreadsheets onto Excel, BUT:

1) when it gets there, it looses the grid lines - no matter that the gridline checkmark is on. I really do need those gridlines.

2) In Lotus I could use keystrokes for copying (such as cell formulas, which would then retain their relative function, or range and cell formatting, etc. Is there a way in Excel to do that, rather than having to go to Home, etc. and using multiple mouse clicks?

Did you copy and paste your data into excel? The correct way would have been to open the file with Excel and then save in Excel format. That always worked for me, but it has been 7 or 8 years since I dad that.

Rosmari
Select the whole of the spreadsheet
Click on the menu "Format"
Click on "Cells..."
Click on the "Patterns" tab
Click on "No Colour"
Click on "OK"

Let me know if you can see the gridlines again.

The normal way to copy and paste in windows apps is to select the data you want to copy, then hold the Ctrl key down on the keyboard and whilst holding that key down, press the C key once and release, then release the Ctrl key.
Go to the location you want to paste and Ctrl + V

Formulas are copied in that way.

To only copy the values and formats etc, having copied the data into the clipboard, click on the first cell that you want to paste the data in.
clik the right mouse button whilst hovering over that cell and select Paste Special... and you have a whole combination of capabilties. You need to practice using those options and see what you get.

Hope that helps to some extent.
If not, keep on posting back until we have sorted your issues

yes, I can now copy one cell at a time. But if I want to copy a cell - i.e. its formula - to the whole column down below, how do I do that?

Firstly click on the cell that contains the data you want to copy.
Then Ctrl + C

Select the cells that you want to copy to. You can select a range of cells by clicking on the first cell, then hold down the Shift key on your keyboard and use your direction keys on your keyboard to select the range you want. Only release the shift key when you have selected the range you want. You can use the PgDn key to move more quickly down a column.

Then Ctrl + V
The data will be copied to all the cells.

Hope that helps.

Incidentally, did you get the gridlines back?

No, I still am not able to show the gridlines. I can't even follow your instructions.
The Lotus spreadsheet is now correctly copied onto the Excel worksheet, but the copied area (and only the copied area) has the gridlines erased - in spite of my having checked the command "Gridlines" (I can't even remember where I found that command).

I still have the Lotus Program CD and it is downloaded into my current Program Files. And I copied all my spreadsheets onto an external hard disk, and then from there onto my Document folder.

If you have any more suggestion, perhaps you could give me detailed, step-by-step instructions - I am strictly a user and not a technician!

Many thanks,
Rose-Marie

Well I thought
Select the whole of the spreadsheet
Click on the menu "Format"
Click on "Cells..."
Click on the "Patterns" tab
Click on "No Colour"
Click on "OK"
was pretty clear..

However

Select the cells that do not show the gridlines
When you have done that, you will see menu choices above the spreadsheet
Hover the mouse pointer over the menu choice Format and click once with the left mouse button
Hover the mouse pointer over the menu choice Cells... and click once with the left mouse button

A dialogue box will appear and below the title bar of the dialogue box, you will see some tabs.
Hover the mouse pointer over the Patterns Tab and click once with the left mouse button

Hover the mouse pointer over the option that says No Colour and click once with the left mouse button

Hover the mouse pointer over the OK button and click once with the left mouse button

The dialogue box will disapear and you should be back in your spreadsheet.

You will probably have the cells still selected, so click once with your left mouse button on a single cell.

Do the gridlines now show?

If you still cannot follow my instructions, then post back on here what you don't understand and I will expand my instructions further. Thats not a problem for me. We are here to help you :-)

I don't see a menu choice "Format". But here is what I did: Home > Cells-Format > Tab Color > No color. But still no gridlines.
I am attaching a picture of it.
(I'm not sure it went through)

Hmmm. Thats strange. What version of Excel are you using?

Are you able to upload an excel spreadsheet with theproblem on it, So that i can have a look for you. Obviously do not include any confidential information.

I am not sure if you have uploaded a file before, so this is how you do it.

Just below the Quick reply box their is a button that says Go Advanced. Click on that.

Then scroll down until you can see a button that says "Manage Attachments" and click on it.

Click on the browse button and find the file on your hard disk. Click on that file. Then click on Upload.

That will put a copy on here, but there is no link to your machine.

I tried this morning, but evidently it failed to get attached. So, once more.
I just noticed that I cannot attach documents with extension .docx(Word), so I printed it, and scanned it to .pdf Hope it gets through.

Hi Rosmari
You look as though you are using Excel 2007.
No wonder you had difficulties following my instructions.
Unfortunately I do not have 2007, so am unable to test out you problems.
It needs somebody who has 2007.

It might be best to mark this thread as solved.

Then create a new thread, maybe as this

Help! Lotus123 conv. to Excel 2007 No Gridlines Why?

Sorry I can't help you any further.
