Kevin, it all makes complete sense now and the method that you have chosen is probably as good as any.
If you imported the Table, how often does the txt File change?
Can we go back to the original post and problem, you say that you tried to use the Link manager, but you got an error when trying to do the Link update manually because the name changed, why did the File name change?
Does it change each time it is updated or change for each person's version.

If you wanted to Import the text file what would the data look like, I asssume that it would be Ok because of the fact that you can link to it?
I have a "browse to file" routine that can be used to find the file for Importing and once found the "Location - Path" can be stored in a Table and used to import it as required.
If it gets moved you can always browse to the new location.

Hi OBP

The file name will be different for each directory (project). The filename would never change in that directory though after it was set. There is no set interval for when the file would change since it changed whenever a chane to the schematic is made. I would just import the data each time the compare is run so that shouldn't be a beg deal I don't think. Is it OK to have queries based off the import table and then delete and re-import the data each time?

I don't understand your question about what the data would look like. I have posted the text file in a earlier post though if you want to look at it. I have used an import and it worked so I think the browse code would work.

Could we make the browse so that it automatically finds the file based on the directory from which the MDB was run? Two directories up from the director ythat has the MDB in it has the name of the project. (C:\HWE\Projects|A0213-2007\Schematics) the MDB would be in the schematics directory. The text file we are importing would always be called the project number_BOM_MAX.txt (A0213-2007_BOM_MAX.txt).

I appreciate the help. -Kevin

Kevin, sorry I hadn't realised that you had posted the txt file.
If it is always in the same directory then a simple Browse to it the once will be easy, or the user could type or copy and paste the path in to the database.
The import routine that I use Deletes the old "Temorary" table and then Imports the data with the same table name, the Import, Append Query and Update Query are all run from the click of a command Button.

It sounds like this should work. Could you send me an example please. Is there a way that I can get the path of the directory without having the user type it in? I would like to make this as automates as possible. Thanks -Kevin

Kevin, I can send you something, but it is quite intensive VBA, so it might be better if I do it for you.
Have you created the Append and Update Queries?
The user will either have to browse to the File or know it's name and type it in.
But this is only the very first time, after that it will just Import it, providing they do not move it.
The system can't find a File unless it knows it's name.
I could send you an Excel Import version that you can look at if you want.

That would be great if you could send me the Excel version to look at. I wasn't asking if the system could find the file I was asking if there was VBA code that could determine the local directory from which the MDB file is running from. The mdb file will always have the same name it is only the text file that will have a different name. Thanks so much for all the help. -Kevin

Kevin, this is the Excel import. Note that there is a lot of VBA, some of it is in Modules as well as the Command Button.
