What are you not understanding in the book? Hopefully I can break it down for you in plain English. If you are looking for the "Queen's English" you will have to consult with OBP up there.

The gift data goes with a person's name. All that's related is that they are the highest scores people got on the questionnaire. So, person's name, gift1, gift2, gift3 (in decreasing score), and then definitions. Then, in Word, I have the list of gifts (mergefield Gift1, 2, etc) in a couple places, but in one of them, I want the Gift1/2/3 data to be replaced by what the definition of the Gift is.

anoki, I am sorry I was confused by the word "gift", I was thinking in terms of "Prize" or "Birthday Gift" etc, not a "Natural gift of personality".
So your second table "Table2" was part way there to doing what you want.
I have never done a Word Mail Merge, so I am not sure how this data will go in to your Word Document but I have rebuilt your tables in a proper conventional Database design.
Are you emailing the Word Docs or Printing them?

The data is in 3 tables, "People", "Gifts" and "Peoples Gifts", the first table provides the people's names and IDs, the second provides the Gift and it's definition and the third brings the other 2 together.
This means that you have 3 records in the People's Gifts table for each person, Gift1 Gift 2 and Gift 3.
This can be seen in the "Gifts Query" where all the data is brought together from the other 2 tables.
