Post Scheduling Access Database Backups
Hi

I would like to backup an Access 2003 database that I created - that includes backing the whole database (which is under 10 MB).

Is there a simple and efficient way to do this within Access 2003 - i.e. does anyone have any simple code to do this?

I dont like the idea of using a batch file outside the database or using Windows own backup scheduler.

Any ideas/code appreciated - thanks

Usman

When would you like the backup to occur? Would you like the backup to happen when the databse is opened?

backup
Hi

I would like the back up to occur each time the database is changed with a time and date stamp yet only keeping the last 5 backups (just to be on the safe side).

Also, I would like to back the database on to c:\ drive (this c drive will be on another computer).

For your info - its for clinical use.

any ideas? Thanks

Usman

Take a look at the link below, and see if this does what you want.

Unhappy code
Hi

I have used that code already - but it didnt do exactly what I wanted.

It does actually save a copy of the database - so that is kewl but I would actually like to copy the database to another computer and would like the new filename to have both a date and time stamp.

I dont really want to use a batch file - I did this (it worked - had to get rid of spaces in filenames etc and I used the Autoexec bat macro and a simple function on startup) but I prefer the VBA method in Access.

I tried using file copy - but didnt succeed - how lame!

any ideas?

Usman, what is the "Full Path" to the "other Computer"?

Result
Hi OBP

I found the result for my query -

http://www.access-programmers.co.uk/...threadid=56751

I will use it to make the backups on the same computer -

I would like to save the backups on a network - I will get the drive path on Monday.

Thanks

OBP -

This code (link) only makes backups but does not delete backups (if there are more than 5 backup files).

I prefer to have no more than 5 backups of the database - so atleast it doesn't clog up the hardrive.

It would be nice to log these backups - in the audit trail. So atleast I know that backups did take place.

Is there a way to inform me whenever a change occurs to the database by email? I think that would be great. The database won't be going through that many changes - I suppose - twice a month if that.

I would like to place a date/time stamp in the main database form - whenever the database is modified. This way, the multidisciplinary staff are informed of the new entries to the database and not have to search the database if new entries were present. Perhaps a flashing text field would be nice whenever the database is updated (if that is easy to implement).

Thanks

Usman

Usman, personally I prefer geekgirleu's version, it has Seven folders one for each day of the week, it then backs up the database into the folder for the Day of the week that it is opened/closed. It includes date time in the file name as well.

To backup the DB to another computer you would need to map a drive that points to the other PC's share directory. As far as maintaining a certain number of backup copies you just need to add some code using FSO (file scripting object) to loop through the backup directory and count the number of files found. If the number exceeds your predetermined amount you would just delete the oldest file in the directory. This code would be fired each time the DB is backed up.

Regards,
Rollin

You could show the users the "Log File" of what has been changed, with it in Descending date order ie last changes at the top.
