Question Solved: Outlook 2003 Toolbar Button
The toolbar macro I created works fine as long as I run it using Alt F8, but I can't keep the Button on the toolbar ( That's what the button's for ,so I don't need to use the Alt F8 method). It disappears once I close Outlook, save the VB project and then reopen Outlook. This only happens on this PC. I have the identical system on my LapTop and the button is aways there as it is supposed to be when Outlook is opened, but not on this desktop PC.
Anyone have any ideas? This one has me stumped. I have already removed and reinstalled Outlook and it did not fix the problem.

Hi K4CYC

Welcome to Tech Support Guy Forums!

Have you tried creating a new profile in Outlook 2003 to see if the button will remain in place in the new profile?

Outlook 2003 Toolbar Button
I have not yet tried a new profile. According to my son who is a IT degree holder this is a rather involved procedure ( if as he says he accurately recalls.). I may eventually have to try it, but I was kinda looking for a direct fix if the actual cause can be determined. This is just my engineer's scientific mindset. If you have any other suggestions they are appreciated. I would like to wait a bit to see what other replies may hold. I can live with Outlook the way it is since it is not a service affecting problem.

Thanks for the timely response.

Creating a new profile is pretty simple, I have a couple "Practice" profiles in Outlook.
It's the "Telling" part that can get involved.

Create a new Profile for Outlook 2003:
Control Panel > Mail Icon > Show Profiles
In the lower half of the window, select: Prompt for a Profile to be used
Click: Apply
Click the Add button.
Name the new Profile.
Recreate your e-mail account, leave password information blank.
Click: Finish
Apply, OK to save and close the add Profiles window.

Start Outlook 2003 and select the new Profile.
If Outlook complains about errors, trying to download your messages,
click File > Work Offline and Outlook will stop trying to Send/Receive messages.

Install the button on the Toolbar in the new Profile, let us know if it remains in the new Profile or not.

Outlook 2003 Toolbar Button
Well I thought this might be good so I tried creating a new profile and now I have new issues. After creating the new profile and putting in a password it keeps coming right back and asking for the same password repeatedly even though the Remember box is checked. So I removed the profile and now every time I open Outlook the "Choose Profile window appears even though I check the default box. I just want to get Outlook back to what it was before all this and forget about playing around with the Macro button thing. It isn't worth it anymore.

Are you setting the original Profile as default in:
Control Panel > Mail Icon > Show Profiles ?

Having a second profile in Outlook isn't going to cause problems in itself, you can set your original profile back to default and only use the practice profile when you want to test something.

Sorry you are having problems.
Perhaps you'll feel more comfortable with creating profiles at a different time.

Latest Update:
I finally decided to completely uninstall Microsoft Office 2003 and after doing this and reinstalling and getting Outlook up and running I went through the steps to create the Macro button once again. After creating the buttun and verifying that it works I closed Outlook, waited and then re-opened Outlook. And surprise, surprise; the button was not there as before. I am baffled, really baffled, because when I created the same Macro button in Outlook on my LapTop it is there all the time.
Soooooo! What the heck is going on here??? Somebody out there must have a new idea or two besides a hand grenade or hammer. Duh... DOH ????

I received your e-mail.

A few things to think about if you would like to continue:

Where were you placing the Macro button?
On a new message toolbar or on a toolbar you see when viewing your Inbox?

Both computers are running Windows XP with Office 2003?

Are you using an Administrator account on both computers?

What action do you have the Macro button programmed to do?

Were you able to compare the VB code with the laptop to verify they matched?

Outlook 2003 Toolbar Button
Here are the answers to your questions.

1. The Macro is placed on the Main toolbar, the one at the top that has "File, Edit View etc. on it. It cannot be placed on any other tool bar. I tried and it is not allowed.

2. Both computers use XP Pro with Office 2003.

3. I use Administrator on both PCs. That's all I ever use since I am the only user.

4. The Macro button is a "Save Attachments" Macro used to enable saving animated GIFs, otherwise I would do the default save procedure which only allows .BMP extensions. This is the reason for creating the button

5.The VB code is identical on both. It works on both, but the button will not remain on the toolbar on this PC. I have to use Ctrl-Alt F8 to launch the Macro here.

6. Here is the link where I obtaind the VB code and procedure for creating and using it. Check it out if you like.

I was able to recreate the Macro and placed the button on the File menu, closed Outlook 2003 and reopened it. The button was still there:

My other Profiles had inherited the button as well.
I was also able to install the button into a new message window and run it within the new message.

Do your toolbars move around on you?
Try creating a new personal Toolbar add the command for Copy (as a control) and add the SaveAttachment Macro button. This should keep the toolbar short.
Leave the toolbar undocked, let it float on the page. Close and restart Outlook to see if the new Toolbar remains or disappears.

Let us know what happens.

Just checking in.
Were you able to create a floating toolbar that would be retained after opening and closing Outlook?

I have not tried your suggestion yet because I had to fly uo to Michigan to attend a wedding and will not be back until 08/17/2008. right now I am Remote desktoping from royal Oak Mich., and although I could try from here I would feel better doing it live at home. So I'll wait untill I return. Thanks for all the input so far. Chat at you then...k
