Starting yesterday, Windows Installer suddenly pops up in my computer when I'm doing nothing to need it, and eventually wants me to load my Word 2003 installation CD, looking for the Setup file. When I *point* it to the Setup file, it still can't find it. This is interfering with several programs, such as Registry Mechanic, as well as when I try to open a document. Registry Mechanic runs as soon as I boot, and Windows Installer keeps coming up on top of it. When I click Cancel, it claims it is canceling, but then it clears that message and tries again. Sometimes I have to click Cancel several times before it finally gives up. I can't live with this!!! Please offer me a helping hand, somebody!

I do have the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility in my computer, and have read the instructions and caveats. Since I'm not trying to install or uninstall any programs, I'm hesitant to use it!

Here is the error message I'm getting when the Installer runs: Installation Error: File not found. A required installation file SKU1CA.CAB could not be found.

Then it sez to load the Microsoft Office Small Business Edition 2003 installation CD and browse for the file, but it can't find it at F:\FILES\SETUP\ where it apparently should be. When I Googled that file name, I found lots of problems dating back to 2004! It must be a common problem, but my search of TSG archives turned up zippo!

I'm still fiddling with this problem, which has about sent me to the Funny Farm! MS Support referred me to Msocache, but the file in there is SKU1CA.XML, which doesn't satisfy the fiendish Windows Installer. In desperation, I even tried the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility and disconnected two programs: CounterSpy and Registry Mechanic, both of which are being interfered with every time they come up.

I seem to recall someone having a problem with Word trying to install when it was already installed (my problem exactly), but I couldn't find it in the archives and don't remember if the problem was solved or not.

Help, somebody, please!!!

Aha! I tracked the problem down to CounterSpy. Their tech support helped me to uninstall and reinstall that program, and my problem is now gone!!!
