PICS rules files being randomly created on my fileserver
Hello All,

I am having a very random issue with PICS files being created on one of our fileservers. A user pointed out to me a few weeks ago that she had noticed files with a key icon were being created in her user folder that would have the same name as other files she had been working on. I assumed it was just her computer until I did a file search on that server; as it turns out this problem has been happening to many users and has been ongoing since 2005; she was merely the first to point it out. Either that or it started happening recently and the PICS rules files being created (.PRF) are somehow using the last modified date of the original doc. Does anyone have any clue as to why some random late 90's internet security format is being created over and over? It doesn't seem like this has happened to many other people either, I had no luck searching google....any help would be greatly appreciated.

Well....they aren't exact duplicates they are .prf files with the exact same name. It is only with .doc files though. As for the Created/Modified dates of these documents, I will give a couple samples.

Document 1 was created Friday, June 02, 2006, 4:28:28 PM
modified Friday, June 27, 2008, 11:48:19 AM

the corresponding .prf file was created Friday, May 16, 2008, 10:35:32 AM
modified Friday, June 27, 2008, 11:48:18 AM

Document 2 was created Tuesday, August 14, 2007, 12:35:23 PM
modified Friday, June 20, 2008, 1:33:54 PM

the corresponding .prf file was created Wednesday, May 28, 2008, 10:55:02 AM
modified Friday, June 20, 2008, 1:33:56 PM

Example three comes from a directory that had thousands of documents, all labeled by number; out of the thousands of documents five .prfs were produced.

Document created Friday, June 02, 2006, 4:38:26 PM
modified Monday, July 19, 2004, 5:17:18 PM

.prf created Friday, June 02, 2006, 4:38:26 PM
modified Thursday, March 24, 2005, 3:31:42 PM

This last set really confuses me since it is somehow listing itself as having been created years after it was last modified, I'm assuming it was made elsewhere and then moved on the server later. Please let me know if this helps or if you can think of anything else that might help bring this mystery to light.
