Access 2003 and VBA
I recently (a week ago) installed Office 2003 on a new laptop (purchased a few weeks ago) running WinXP SP2. I copied many files from my old laptop which was running Office 2000 and WinXP SP2. I can not successfully open any Access files created in Access 2000 (on the old laptop) that have VBA in the background. I get an error message indicating that I need to update the version of MS Jet4.0 on my system; in particular

"Microsoft Jet 4.0 Service Pack 8 or later must be installed to block unsafe expressions without affecting common functionality."

So I downloaded the identified update and tried to install it. But I am informed that the SP of WinXP I am running does not need this update:

KB829558 SetUp Error
Setup has detected that the Service Pack version of this system is newer than the update you are applying

There is no need to install this update

Per the MS web page, the Jet4 SP8 update is from 15-Oct-2003, so it is not surprizing that the system thinks it is old (new laptop has new load of WinXP from manufacturer). There appears to be no update beyond SP8 and no newer version of SP8. My copy of Office 2003 was purchased in 2006, so I am surprized that it does not have the most receent SP for Jet4 ... or is Jet4 part of the OpSys?

Any recommendations? Is there some way to "force" the update? Is there any way to determine what SP the Jet 4 db package actually has? Might SP3 for WinXP contain the necessary Jet4 SP? I am reluctant to upgrade WinXP to SP3 because of the many horror stories I have heard.

Read this:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/239114
and determine what version you have first.

If you have SP8 already, you can disable these messages in Access by lowering your macro security settings:
Tools | Macro | Security | Low.

According to the link you suggested, I have 4.0.9511.0 which is for
Windows XP SP3 and Security Bulletin MS08-028

Makes no sense because I am not running WInXP SP3, I am running WinXP SP2.

Yes, that will disable the messages, but does not solve the problem. Because of this conflict between Access2003 and the Jet db, the ability to run VBA is disabled in my version of Access2003
