Just to clarify, the e-mail accounts in question are from the same ISP as your work ISP?
Is this an Exchange Server environment?

I have decided that if my emails, which are in .pst format, can be imported to Thunderbird then I will just go with that.

I did read that some people using Thunderbird have had issues with sending attatchments to recipients with Outlook mail clients though such as, the attachment sent turns up with some of the file's bytes missing rendering it useless.

I think, worry about attachments when you cross that bridge.

Does Thunderbird work on your machine? That is the first issue.

Since you haven't been able to use Outlook 2003, to Send and Receive, I wouldn't think there is much to save from that .pst file.
