access autonumber problem
We are using access 2003. One table in the database has an autonumber field used as unique identifier. For no apparent reason, the autonumbering skipped about 21,000 numbers. Why did this happen and how can we correct it?

Thanks.

hogwild, welcome to the Forum.
If the table is Related to other tables you can't correct it, but why would you want to.
The users should not even see the Autonumber ID field so it's sequence shouldn't really matter.
It can happen if you do any Importing or deleting of data, other than that it could be an Access glitch.

Thanks I guess we will just have to live with it. We also use the auto ID for manual look ups, so it would be better not to have to use 5 digit numbers.

Why use the ID, can't you use more user friendly data like names etc?

Name is stored only in 1 table, with autonumber and other info re that individual. Other tables are joined to this table by ID. So may use ID to manually look up an individual in another table.

Name is stored only in 1 table, with auto ID and other info about the individual. Other tables are joined to this table by ID. May need to use ID to manually look up an individual in another table (not main table where name is stored).

If you use a Combo Box with 2 columns, the first being the ID and the second being the name. with the ID column width set to 0cm. The users only see the name but you can use the ID to do the "look up".
