Transpose data in excel or word?
I'm doing some work and at the end of each run I get a block of data like so:

0.343 0.232 0.212 0.123213 0.121
...
...
..

There is over a 1000 numbers like this, I need to put them into a spreadsheet to do further work on them.

So far I just paste the above into notepad and manualy sort the data into one big columb, is there a quick way to do this in excel or using a macro in word?

You can try the following...

1. Copy data from WORD
2. PASTE SPECIAL as TEXT in EXCEL
3. Now that you have your data in EXCEL, again copy this data. This time not from WORD but from EXCEL
4. Now try PASTE SPECIAL in a different row. You should be able to see the TRANSPOSE option

I just realized that the steps above will not help since you stated that you paste the values into notepad/word.

What kind of format are the numbers originally reported in before you copy and paste into notepad?

The number are given in a window in the program i am using i copy and paste them into notepad this is an exact copy of what it looks like:

Columns 199 through 204

0.9997 -0.9260 1.0000 -0.9780 0.9700 0.9471

Columns 205 through 210

-0.9999 0.9734 -0.9996 0.8069 -0.9994 0.9454

Columns 211 through 216

-0.9363 1.0000 0.9998 0.9453 -0.9659 -0.9186

yes thats exatcly how they are I just copied and pasted them here.

You could try the following:
1. Copy the first row of numbers (
0.9997 -0.9260 1.0000 -0.9780 0.9700 0.9471)
2. Paste them into Word
3. Select the row of numbers once again
4. Click Table - Convert - Text to Table
5. At the bottom look for "Seperate Text at" and Choose "Other" and type in the space (It will look blank but it should work)
6. The numbers should now be in a table in word.
7. Select this table and paste it into excel (you can choose to match the destination formatting if required)
8. Copy the cells which have the numbers
9. Select another cell
10. Choose Edit - Paste Special and choose transpose
11. The numbers should now be in one column.

I know its a round about way but should be shorter than actually using enter to get each no. on a seperate line.

Mel, it might be roundabout, but that's exactly how I would do it, too. The only thing is that 8 through 11 shouldn't even be needed if robson tells Word he wants one column when he converts text to table....

This is a much shorter way. I found it later
1. Paste your text / numbers in excel (will be in a single column)
2. Select that cell
3. Choose Data - Text to columns
4. Choose the file type option "Delimited" - Click Next
5. Select the delimiter "Space" - Click Space
6. Click Finish

Your text will now be seperated into individual columns. Sorry for the earlier post. I knew there had to be an easier way

Perhaps faster to copy, open Excel, Paste Special, text.
It may paste all into one column. If so, highlight the column, go to Data, Text-to-Columns and choose Delimited.
Select Space.
