Solved: Excel Web Querying
I'm trying to set up a New Web Query in Excel. But as soon as I open the window (while it's loading the homepage) it crashes. It happens every time. I've tried restarting my computer, and I've tried altering my homepage to see if that makes a difference. I'm running Excel 2003 and IE7.

Any suggestions as to why it's crashing and (more importantly!) how I can make it work?!

Thanks!

Hi! Are you attempting to create your query from within Excel or from the page in IE?

I'm in Excel. I'm going to Data -> Import External Data -> New Web Query. When that window pops up, I see the homepage trying to load, then within a second or two Excel crashes. Every single time!

Well, it is hard to know if it is Excel or IE. (I would suggest you get IE8, by the way.) I don't know if IE7 has this capability, but try going to your page, then right-clicking and see if you get an "Export to Microsoft Excel" option and try that. At least the page will have been loaded already.

Didn't know you could export to Excel like that - handy! That works fine ... so I guess that'll have to do by now. I might try with IE8 and see what happens. Everyone in the office is still on IE6 so I'm already one step ahead of most of the ppl here...

Glad it helped! It really is the process - the pop-up even says the same thing about "import" although you are exporting from IE. IE8 has some security features that make it really worthwhile having - I am a major Firefox user, but one needs IE at some time, so you should have the most recent version - and get everyone else to update too!

Believe me, I'm a Firefox user at home, but have to use IE at work... I can't believe they're stuck on IE6 here, considering the size of this corporation. Still, the "official line" is that IE6 is what's on people's machines. I installed IE7 "at my own risk"... I'll see what happens when I try IE8

Thanks for the help, Slurpee!

No problem!
I work for a small company, where I am not the IT person, but I am the one who keeps the PCs up-to-date. My own is always a fair ways advanced over the others, but, hey, that's too bad....
