palm zire 71--cannot hotsynch
A friend gave me her old Zire 71 and so I ran the PD414esetup.exe and was able to retrieve my addresses from my previous Palm IIIe.

However, I have not been able to do any Hotsychs: Message on handheld in cradle says: "The connection between your handheld computer and the desktop could not be established. Please check your setup and try again."

My cradle is connected to my PC by a USB cable. But when I choose HotSync/Setup/Local from the main Palm menu, I only get one choice: Com1. I cannot select anything else OR add another value on this screen.

So it looks like the handheld in cradle is expecting to be connected to Com1 (I think I have a Com1 but it has a different connector, not USB so I'd have to get a special cable.)

How can I resolve this because I cannot hotsynch my handheld?

I have:
Palm Zire 71, Desktop 4.14
Windows XP, SP3 Nu 2600, Dell Dimension x86 processor
Thanks in advance

Welcome to TSG Caro1967.

The only directions that I could find online that sounded like it might pertain to your situation says

Quote:
It sounds like you have your HotSync Manager listening to your Local Serial port and the Network.

Click on the HotSync icon in the Windows system tray/pan, and make sure that Local USB is checked, and that Local Serial and Network are unchecked. Then try to HotSync again.

Did What You said but it didn't work
At first the HotSynch icon was not displayed in the system tray. So I looked on the net and figured out how to redisplay it.

Then I did what you said, but I could not update my handheld in the cradle. Same error message as before. It does not even start synching.
