Solved: outlook will not open
I am running XP home, and office professional 2003. Close and shut the down the computer. when I rebooted this is the message I am getting when I open outlook.

unable to display the folder. the file c:\documents and setting\garyreynolds\local setting\application data\microsoft\outlook\outlook.pst is in use and could not be assessed. close any application that is running this file, then try again.

To my knowleadge I have no other program running that is using this file.

What has happened and how do I fix this. Gary

Are you able to open Outlook from the start menu? Does the PST file exist? Hit Windows key + F for search and type *.pst in the search and set it to search in the C:\ It is also a possibility that the PST file is corrupted.

thank you for the reply. I am assuming this is the same repair toll that is located in the help section of outlook. I have run this toll but it does not fix the problem. Ran your search and came up with 4 different Scan.pst I am at a loss at this point when it asked me for a folder or file name. I think I am looking for the name that is in my out files that is gary or am I looking or the one that says personal folders. Look forward to yoru reply. Gary

How can you run the tool from Outlook if it won't open?

Running the Scanpst.exe tool merely requires clicking it and locating the .pst file to run it.

staffingpro

Have you tried creating a new profile in Outlook, starting Outlook with the new profile and then connecting the original Personal Folders (.pst file) to the new profile?

How to create a new e-mail profile in Outlook 2007 and in Outlook 2003

Well I discounted that possibility because of this:
"thank you for your reply. I did not find the pst file with your search. Now what."

OK, maybe I did not explain things correctly. Outlook does open, but I cannot view any of the folders. Cannot send or reecieve e-mail. The inbox will not display nor will junk mail. I have a spam filter and there are hundreds of e-mails there but cannot delete them.

Control Panel > Mail icon > Data Files button
This will show you all the .pst files that Outlook 2003 knows about.

With Outlook 2003 closed, run the Scanpst.exe tool and using the file paths you located in the Data Files window Browse to the .pst file (labeled as the Mail Delivery Location) to run the tool.

If that doesn't help, I would suggest uninstalling the Spam program to see if you are still receiving errors.
How large are the .pst files?

There is also the option of creating a new profile as I suggested earlier.

Hi I am back trying to get my outlook program running. I found the data file but when I go to browse and try to find mail delivery I am not finding it. Also, if I run a search .pst nothing come up. I must be missing something. It appears I do not know what I am doing or what I am looking for. YOur instructions are clear, just not finding .pst file or anything named mail delivery.

your pst file should be located here
c:\documents and setting\garyreynolds\local setting\application data\microsoft\outlook\outlook.pst

in windows explorer can you navigate to that folder?
i am not sure if some of those may be hidden folders,
in which case you would need to make hidden files and folders visible in
menu > tools > folder options > view > check the radio button for hidden files and folders

if you can open the folder can you see the pst file?
if so rename to something like outlook.pst.old

try starting outlook, it should now offer the option to create new folders and also require setting up of your mail and other services

if you old file contains important information it may be recoverable, but it would probably be on a pay for service basis
