#31 | Yes it is a legit version of Office, and it has been activated. Fact is, a few months ago i found out that the person who loaded Office for me about a year ago, loaded a pirate copy without me knowing. Meanwhile about a month ago I found out that i had a pirate copy, and then I went and bought a legit copy, only the one I bought was Home and Student and the illegal one was something else i forget what. I couldn't uninstall it because i didn't have the disc, so my computer shop uninstalled it for me because i'm not clued-up enough to work in the registry. Theh they installed Home and Student for me from the disc i bought. Maybe my laptop still "thinks" it has the illegal copy on it Lol! I didn't think that this could be the reason why the SP1 and 2 won't install - seems like it is. Now how do I "convince" the laptop it has a legal copy of Office on it? | | Distinguished Member with 6,294 posts. | | Join Date: Oct 2004 Location: Southwest Iowa.... #32 | The easiest way to find out if you have legitimacy problems is to open up Internet Explorer (not Firefox or another browser) and go to Microsoft Update (which will check your PC for validity) and, assuming you have no problems there, then click on Update History over on the top left.
All of the updates you have tried to install - but were unable to - should be listed with a red X and it says you can click on the red X for assistance.
Now, this is MS, so I wouldn't hold my breath, but....

#34 | Wow, there are several pages of failed updates on the update history. (I printscreened them to keep for later if necessary.) When I clicked the red cross next to Sp1's failed installation, it told me: Installation Failure
Error Code: 0x80246007
Try to install the update again, or request help from one of the following resources.
For self-help options:
Frequently Asked Questions
Find Solutions
Windows Update Newsgroup
For assisted support options:
Microsoft Online Assisted Support (no-cost for issues related to getting updates)
Should I click on the Online Assisted Support? It seems like the best one to pick.
_______________
Well, I clicked on the link for Online Assisted Support, and it took me to yet another Microsoft Support Site Satisfaction Survey, which I came across earlier this week in my search for finding solutions. Seems like I'm going around in circles here. Maybe, as I said before, I should just live with this situation. I won't blame any of you kind guys who have been helping me if you don't have any more answers.

#36 | According to MS, the problem is not necessarily in the registry. They state:
"This problem may occur if the Windows Update database is corrupted." (note the MAY there....)
Instructions on how to correct it are here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/958042 | | Senior Member with 102 posts. | | Join Date: Sep 2005 Location: Western Cape, South Africa Experience: Learning new things daily |

#37 | Ok, I created a batch file according to the instructions on the web page, and I right-clicked it, but there is no option on the context menu that says "Run as administrator". See attachment.
_____________ DUH ............. I looked at the Vista instructions. Let me try again...looking at the WinXP instructions this time!
Please ignore the first half of this post and its attachment.

#38 | I executed the batch file and tried again to install those updates, but no success. It keeps telling me the same stuff as before ("The installation of this package failed"). | | Distinguished Member with 6,294 posts. | | Join Date: Oct 2004 Location: Southwest Iowa.... Here's another attachment - the one that appears when I click the automatic updates balloon. It says updates cannot be installed.

#42 | did you install the installer first? | | Senior Member with 102 posts. | | Join Date: Sep 2005 Location: Western Cape, South Africa Experience: Learning new things daily |

#43 | Yes, I installed it first (Windows Installer 4.5 Redistributable (filename: WindowsXP-KB942288-v3-x86.exe). After running it, it told me, "You have successfully completed the KB942288-v3 setup wizard." The Automatic Updates balloon in the system tray (for the installation of Office Suite Sp1) disappeared, but when I tried installing Sp1 from the file that I downloaded, it said, "The installation of this package failed." The same happened with the Office Suite Sp2. Meanwhile, Automatic Updates have asked me 2x to reboot since installing the Windows Installer, because "it had updates to install". I suspect something good has happened somehow - I just can't figure out what. Maybe we should close this discussion that has been going around in circles - and I'll start a new discussion if I have any problems again. | | Distinguished Member with 6,294 posts. | | Join Date: Oct 2004 Location: Southwest Iowa.... #44 | After installing the installer, you must reboot to make registry changes - did you do that?
Otherwise, Windows will continue to use the old settings and your other updates will fail. | | Senior Member with 102 posts. | | Join Date: Sep 2005 Location: Western Cape, South Africa Experience: Learning new things daily |
