Well, after the 2nd reboot, I didn't try again to install the downloaded sp1, although the automatic updates balloon in the system tray is now gone.

If you go to the turn off computer, does it show the "off" button with a label attached saying something about needing reboot?
If not, try installing your update - and good luck!

I have just tried that, and no, there is no label at the "turn off" button. So I think everything that the computer needed to install automatically, has been installed (although i could be wrong).
I'm going offline now for a while - will be back later. Thanx for all your help.

wow..........after reading all of this, I'm going to have to go with rich's answer; something is hosed in the registry after that pirated copy was installed. When you remove something from the appwiz applet, you don't dump all the registry files; a good little app that is handy to have around that DOES do that is revouninstaller. I'd download that, see if it recognizes that pirated version of Office, but other than that, it's going to have to be a reformat or live with it type deal.

I mean, everything has been tried, but the simple fact that it won't sp2 for office 2k7 means that something is shot in the registry. That's the smoking gun right there. Your computer shop people may have uninstalled it, but I guarantee you all they did was use the add/remove applet, and that won't clean out the registry.

And by the way, you should never, ever use automated registry cleaners except for revouninstaller. I've had to fix so many pc's from registry cleaners mucking stuff up it's not even funny anymore.

You could try to call MS, but the answer, I am certain, lies buried in thousands of entries in the registry; finding them all would be impossible.

As rich stated, it's time to nuke and pave or live with it as is, unfortunately.

I guess one option that hasn't been done is to use revo to uninstall your current office suite, make sure you choose the heaviest level of uninstall (there's only 4), have it clean out all the registry entries (it will find about 9k of them) and reboot, reinstall office with the license key and go from there. Only problem with that is that your license key may not work (very slim chance, but it's there) and you would then have to call MS regardless.

Sorry I couldn't be of more help.............

greenbean, valis is the more knowledgeable one I called on...if what he suggests can't help, well, then you will have to go along with what he and rich said - format and start over or ignore it forever.
Sorry....

Thanks for the vote of confidence my friend valis, and you know how much I hate to suggest what I call "wipe and load"( and you call "nuke and pave") but I just could not see any other solution and you are so right about not using reg cleaners and not being able to really repair the registry properly from this kind of thing. We concur as usual!

well, you had it pegged right off the bat. If sp2 won't install, something is funky in the registry; something, somewhere is telling it not to install.

As there was, at one point in time, a pirate version on there, I'd bet your next paycheck that that is what is holding up the install.

And there is NO WAY I'm going to go through and find 9k entries in there.

We could write some code to check it. And for anyone who thinks I'm serious, I really do have better things to do with my time. LOL!

Hey guys, thanx a lot for all your input and assistance. I think I'd rather live with the service packs not being able to install, than to mess with the registry or even using a good software program like revo, as valis suggested, to uninstall it, and risking that the license key won't work when i try re-installing it afterwards. Hopefully, my Office suite won't be that vulnerable to spyware or viruses. You have all been of gr8 help - at least i now have an idea why the service packs wouldn't install, whereas i didn't have a clue before.

As I mentioned in my 1st post of 5 November, the automatic updates balloon in the system tray disappeared after i installed the "Windows Installer 4.5 Redistributable" package which slurpee55 suggested. And, my system asked to be rebooted on 2 occasions. Maybe all that did something good to my system.

Seems like we can now close this query?
