Solved: Can not delete Word file
A Word file, tittled "Document1, was saved on my computer in September. When I open Word this file appears with out my call to open file. I've tried everything I know to eliminate this file without success. I can't find the file when I search for it, but it opens each and every time I open Word.
What is even stranger, I deleted Word from my computer and re-installed the program from the original disc and when I open the re-installed program that file opens. In addition all my other Word files are available.
How can I delete a file that exist but can't be found on Search?

Is this a blank document and does it appear every time you fire up Word?

If so it is THE default file that Microsoft places in a NEW session of Word. It does NOT exist but is generated every time.

If it is NOT a blank document, then do a "File, Save As" and note WHERE it is being saved. Then open Windows explorer, and browse to the location that you noted earlier, and the file should be there.

Dave, Thanks for your response. The document that opens is not blank but is a Word document. As you suggested, I did a "save as" an the saved the document in the folder that was suggested, which happened to be a folder located in "Documents and Settings". I right clicked on the document and deleted the document. I shut down Word and restarted it again and lo and behold the pesky document showed up. Not deleted. Now what?

I did NOT want you to save it again, all I wanted yo to do was FIND where it would have been saved.

Now I want you to try this, With Document1 open, open a NEW file, the if you have the SAME data in this new file, then we need to open the Normal.dot file and see what is in it.

What version of Word are you using?

If this document opens when you open word your Default.dot file has been replaced by this one. Look for the default.dot file on your PC and delete it. Word will create a new one the next time you start it. BTW, When Word opens it automatically creates a new document named "Document1", this is the normal operation of Word.

Every time you open Microsoft Word, you go to a blank page. That blank page is called Normal.dot. If you ever open Microsoft Word, and you don’t get a blank page, then your Normal.dot file has somehow been changed. Somehow, it got saved with information in it – hmmmm.

OK – so, how do you get rid of that page and get back to a blank page. You simply have to delete your Normal.dot file. The next time you start Microsoft Word, you will have a blank page.

So how do you delete the Normal.dot file. Here are some simple steps to deleting it.

1. Double click on My Computer.
2. Click on the Tools menu in the top menu bar.
3. Click on Folder Options...
4. Click on the View Tab
5. Click on the little button next to "Show hidden files and folders" (in the Advanced Settings box)
6. Click OK.
7. Double click on Local Disk (C
8. Double click on the Documents and Settings folder
9. Double click on the folder with your user name
10. Double click on Application Data. (That folder will be dimmed)
11. Double click on the Microsoft folder.
12. Double click on the Templates folder.
13. Right click on the Normal.dot file and delete it
14. Now you need to hide your hidden folders again
15. Click on the Tools menu in the top menu bar.
16. Click on Folder Options...
17. Click on the View tab.
18. Click on the little button next to "Do not show hidden files and folders" (in the Advanced Settings box)
19. Click on OK.
20. Close all the open windows and you are done!

That's it when you start Word again, you will have a new blank document - a new Normal.dot.
END OF QUOTE

I discovered the Normal.dot when i checked the properties of Document 1 when i opened Word. Then googled it and came up with above.
Hope it helps

Pedro

I think it is "Normal.dot" file that is causing the problem.

This normal.doc file can be found on a XP machine and Word 2003 at C:\Documents ans settings\"UserName"\Application Data\ Microsoft\ Templates

Open this file, delete any data that is in the files, save it, and close.
