use this function
This assumes that A1 is a blank cell and will not be used. So if you open a blank workbook and give sheet1 a name such AstonVilla

Then put this formula in cell A2. A1 needs to be blank.

=MID(CELL("filename",A1),FIND("]",CELL("filename",A1))+1,256)

You could use 31 instead of 256, as Excel only allows 31 characters to a sheet name.

Or, Morefunc.xll add-in by Laurent Longre has a function called SHEETNAME() which you can use. IMHO it's a must-have add-in for Excel. That and ASAP Utilities.

The SHEETNAME() function will error unless you download and install the morefunc.xll add-in. Villan's formula will work for you though.

They work for me. Do a search for "morefunc english" or "asap utilities", whichever you're looking for.
