[URGENT!] Word .doc files blank after saving and sending?! Help!!
Hi there,

My mother is having some pretty serious issues with her work files. In a nut shell, she works for an online transcribing company. She has all her clients templates that she saves as a .doc before typing things out. They send her audio files and she types them out in Word and sends them back via FTP.

A few weeks ago I bought her a brand new laptop (Dell Inspiron 17 with Win 7 and Office 2007 Home and Student) and now she says that yesterday she uploaded a completed word .doc but on the other end they got the error message "MSWRD632" and something about a file converter and they weren't able to open it, but then she uploaded it again and they could?! Before she got this laptop there were some other issues (which is why I bought the laptop!!) and there seems to be a breakdown of trust now as they see my mother as 'unreliable'... so I really need to iron out these problems!!!!

Here are the installed updates:

She is saving the documents as 'Word 97-2003 Documents' so they can open the files up on the other end with previous versions of Office, so I'm guessing that some update has caused the converter to throw up a problem somewhere? Maybe not, but that would be my guess!

So please please please, if any Tech wizards out there know of a fix - let me know!!!!!!

Much appreciated,
Ash

Hi mate,
Sounds very strange however i googled it and i found this forum post suggesting to delete a regisrty file: http://www.wincert.net/tips/1786-wor...wpc-error.html. I dont know why it is trying to convert something unless you have been using older versions of word. Try googling the error and see what you can find. I would recommend putting it on an official microsoft website such as: http://social.answers.microsoft.com.

Good Luck

Hmmm... That post kind of suggests that it is a problem on the other end? The strange thing is, is that there are roughly 300 people working for the company, some of which are using Office 2007, and the clients are all almost certainly on Win xp and Office 2003, and yet files from my mother are the only ones out of everyone that have this problem??!

This is the MS article concerning this problem with update KB973904.

I would apply the fix and then if the problem persists that would indicate it's on their end although it sounds like it since they are the ones getting the error message.

I can't find that registry location..

And also how can my mother be the only person who's files give this error when there are others on Win7 and Office 2007??!

Just a thought here, why not try a different format to eliminate that being the problem on the other end. Just have her try a test, and save a document as an rtf file(rich text file), and send it to see if they can open it on their end. It would just be a test, so I couldn`t see the harm.

Is RTF any different to a regular .doc? What I mean is does it remove formatting (headers, etc.) or anything else after you save it? Just need to know as basically when she sends work off, the clients need to be able to just open it and print it without fiddling around reformatting, etc.

RTF files are somewhat different, but if opened in Word there will be little difference that one can tell (rtf is a format that MS developed.) Most of the formatting is the same as with a doc file. The problem is definitely on the other end, and is due to a security update messing up the converter. They need to go to this page:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/973904
and then click on the "Fix it" button.

I have to say, all fingers seem to be pointing at that update..

It still doesn't explain how files uploaded by my mother are the only ones that bring up the converter error. The company has 300+ typists and over 1000 clients and she is the only one! :S

Well, the other thing is that possibly, while she is saving as doc format for 2003, if they are being converted, well, she isn't doing so after she enters the data - they end up being saved as docx files. I don't know 2007 well, but you can change the default format for saving to 2003. For instructions on how to do so (they are rather complicated, sigh) read here:

Hey, sorry haven't been able to get on in a few days!

If that fix (for http://support.microsoft.com/kb/973904) will it remove that update on the affected computer or just sort it out? And is there anything else that has to be done to fix it?

Thanks

I think if you just click on the Fix It button it will take things from there and should do the job entirely. No guarantees - I haven't had to deal with this problem personally - but I think that is the whole point.
