Solved: recipe comparison on excel 2003
Hi:
I have a number of curry recipies that have similar items.
They are stored on excel spreadsheets individually.
Is there a way to display them all on one page so the ingredients align themselves?

If you mean to have all of the recipes in one excel spreadsheet, you can simply copy the data into the one sheet. OR you can retype the data on one sheet so that it fits your storage needs. When you say "...so the ingredients align themselves?" are you saying that each row has a certain ingredient? It would be better to have an idea of how you want the recipes aligned.

Thanks for the reply.

I would love to have the final sheet look like this:

Ingredient Recipe1 Recipe 2
coriander 2 4
bay leaves

wrong button hit

Ingredient recipe 1 recipe 2
coriander 3 2
bay leaves 2 0
cumin 2 3
ginger 1 2

but without entering manually.
is there a way to import worksheets onto one worksheet and have the merged
worksheet look like above?

Ah, I see so let's say right now you have...

Ingredient recipe 1 (here you want to merge recipe 2)

Not sure how it will turn out but you can merge the spreadsheets.

http://www.ehow.com/how_2020064_merg...oks-excel.html

There's a quick step way of doing it. It doesn't say how to get to track changes, but you're gonna want to go to "Tools > hit the down arrow for more options > hover over Track Changes > Hit highlight changes. You can select the rows where changes are to occur from there. That's where the info SHOULD merge into from your other spreadsheets.

Good luck.

Can you post your file? It all depends on your data structure. You're looking to do this only once?

You sent me an email via the forum software. I tried replying but you have your account settings so as to not receive emails from other board users. The first option we try to adhere to is to keep the spreadsheet intact and just change any secure information to 'dummy' data, thus keeping the data on the board. This gives you the added benefit of having all board members/experts looking at your data, not just one.

Curries
I attached 2 dummy curry recipies..........not to be made LOL.
They have some items in common but different amounts
some differing items.
I would just like to be able to compare visually a few recipies.

Yeah, these boards won't keep any formatting, especially spacing, it trims everything. When you click the Reply button, under the body of the reply there is a button called Manage Attachments, click it. You should get a dialog box that pops up, click the Browse button, navigate to your file, select it, click OK. Then, back at your dialog box, click the Upload button. Once you see the name in the box and it has uploladed, click Close Window. You should now be back at your post, just click Submit.

Combine the data and make a pivot table, with the Ingredients in the rows, Recipe (name/identifier) in the columns, and Amounts as the values. I'll upload a sample file with the data you posted. Two sheets of data (Formula 1 and Formula 2) were where I just copy/pasted the data so I could have it in one workbook. The other sheet is where I just pasted all of the data together and added a helper column to column A, where I added the recipe name. Then I used that data as the source data for the pivot table.
