Here are details of situation and what I did to create a temporary fix. And i say temporary, as i have followed all of these same steps (Except Step 1) many times before to fix this problem and it keeps recurring:
Details. I have MS OFFICE 2003 with Outlook 2003 running on Dell Server and MS Server 2003 R2. this system has been up and running fairly flawlessly for about 3 years. On or about 8/21, Outlook started to fail to launch. The first time this happened, i noticed that MS had sent out updates on 8/21 and one of these was an Outlook 2003 updated. I immediately deleted the update and rebooted Outlook and it booted up and worked fine...for about 2 days. Then same problem - failed to launch. Checked to be sure that update hadnt reinstalled itself (it hadnt), then ran the MS OFFICE 2003 repair function. Repair ran successfully and Outlook was able to launch succesfully. (BTW, there have been NO problems with any of the other MS OFFICE components - Word, Excel, PP, etc). Over the last 3 weeks, this same problem has been recurrning about 3 times a week, and i have had to go through the same process - run MS OFFICE repair, in order for Outlook to launch successfully.
After Googling this problem this morning (9/08/10), i found this forum. I attempted the suggested repair i found here (RUN/Outlook.exe /resetnavpane) but it did not work.
Here is what i ended up doing -
1. Found a rogue copy of Outlook 2007 on the server and removed it.
2. Ran REINSTALL feature on my MS OFFICE 2003 which reinstalls as MS OFFICE components back to original. Did NOT lose any data, files or emails.
3. THEN restarted my server.
Outlook launched successfully....but, it has done this before and problem has come back after day or two. There does not seem to be any common factor that triggers the Outlook problem. Server stays on 24/7 and some days Outlook launches fine and other days it does not.
Have not ADDED any new software to server recently and certainly not since 8/21 when problem started.
Have NOT reinstalled the MS updates to the server.
My best guess is that MS has sent out a viral update that crashes older versions of MS OFFICE/Outlook in order to get us to purchase newer versions because they need some money.
Seriously...i am clueless as to what is triggering this and what needs to be done to fix it permanently.
Suggestions?
