You think society was much better off?

Lets think, in "traditional society";

Slavery was common and accepted.

Men "owned" their wives and often beat them and/or their children and it was ignored.

Women weren't given equal rights because they were "inferior".

Yeah, society sure was much better

In todays society, it's about change. Every day, things change, you have to adapt, or you fall behind. Obviously you have chosen the latter, and it shows.

Your close mindedness, your disrespect to people just because they are younger than you is a disgrace to your generation.

You may not believe me but, I do respect my elders. BUT I expect to a little respect in return.

If you met me in person, you'd realize that for 22, I'm extremely mature and intelligent. I handle most situations better than people twice my age. These aren't things I'm saying about me, these are things "my elder generation" have told me, on numerous occassions.

But I do call things as I see them. Regardless of how old a person is, what gender they are, it doesn't matter. You act like an immature ***. And I'll let you know.

Obviously you are incapable of having an intelligent conversation without resorting to childish tactics and acting as though being older makes you inately superior.

The apostle Paul is writing to Tomothy about the church in Ephesus (1:3) and this passage is pertains to women who fill the role of pastors, not to women who spread the gospel. Again....you have to look at the history to understand the context. Ephesus was a wealthy city that revolved around the Temple of Diana, one of the seven wonders of the ancient world. Understanding the religion of Diana, (aka Artemis) is important in understanding the background of the Ephesian people. Diana/Artemis was believed to protect women during childbirth. Thousands of women died in childbirth or in illnesses following childbirth. A goddess that could supposedly protect them would have a very loyal following...How were men attracted to this religion of a multi-breasted goddess? Ritual prostitution was a part of the worship of Diana. Paul may be fighting these sexual practices when in chapter 1:20 he addresses "adulterers and perverts" and then urges Timothy to "fight the good fight (against wrong doctrines), holding on to the faith and a good conscience." Some who have rejected faith and a good conscience (meaning they are engaged in sinful practices) are Hymenaeus and Alexander whose teachings are blasphemy. Remember when Paul argued against "myths" in 1 Tim 1:4? It was commonly believed at Ephesus that the original founders of the city were Amazons, and that the present residents were descended from these Amazons. According to the encyclopedia, An "Amazon, was one of a race of warlike women who made slaves of the men they captured. According to ancient Greek tradition, ....The largest city they built was Ephesus. There they built many magnificent temples for the worship of Ares and Artemis." The Amazons are believed by some historians to have been real women whose exploits were magnified into myth. These Amazons are reported to have believed they were not only equal to men, but far superior to men.....hush up, girls! Therefore, proponents of the Amazons' goddess Diana taught female superiority, and this background was causing marital problems for the Christian couples of Ephesus! Paul addresses this problem in Ephesians 5:22 as he urges wives to defer to their Christian husbands. The problem was that Ephesian women had been taught in their pre-Christian days that they were descended from Amazons, a superior female race!

Some women were dressing immodestly, even indecently, and were dripping with gold and pearls like the prophetesses of Diana. These women were very likely advocating that one old standby of Diana's religion...female domination! Paul rebukeds them for their indecent clothing and tells them to "dress modestly, with decency and propriety, not with braided hair or gold or pearls...but with good deeds, appropriate for women who profess to worship God." Did you notice his sideways swipe at "women who profess to worship God"? Paul felt these women weren't truly worshipping God, only professing to worship God! And that is all too true today too! I see many women who come to church dressed to the hilt, makeup so thick you cant even see their faces and big showy rings and such.

Now it makes much sense to me that Paul was addressing the problem of men bringing unconverted wives to church. Was this the case with the wealthy women with low-cut dresses, gold and pearls, who "profess" to worship God, but still are loyal to Artemis and the Amazons causing trouble in the church? Notice especially 1 Tim 4:7, where Paul links "godless myths" directly to wives! And even though it was an age-old myth....how many women today still believe they are a superior race *cough-feminism-cough* How many men here have experience a woman who has used her charms to manipulate or control him?

All believers are commanded to spread the gospel.....that is a fact in scripture. Furthermore, Priscilla assisted her husband in teaching Apollos (Acts 18:26). So if the verse is applied as some would have us believe, then Priscilla sinned in that she helped in teaching a man the things pertaining to the word of God.

sorry it is sooo long....but does it answer your question?

what kind of logic is this? They are not believers? Are you saying that I must submit to them? I am commanded to submit to my husband as the authority in my life and I do...but scripture says nothing about submitting to unsaved people (in the area of biblical doctrines).

again...go back and read. And FYI, my wedding band is white gold...the only piece of jewelry I wear. Yes, I own jewelry but I rarely wear it. I dont like necklaces but I keep them as keepsakes and my hair gets caught in earrings so I dont bother.

gee Columbo.....borrowing a page from landover's are ya? Show me where the word of God says I must be taught from the scriptures by unbelievers and then I will listen to you....you neither care about God's word nor believe in it so who are you to try to use it in an authoritative way when you have no interest in it at all other than to use it against me?

noted: edited for typos...where was that spell-checker button again?
How hypocritical. How can you use scriptures which we don't believe to preach to us, yet we can't use those same things in reverse. Open your eyes, if you claim to believe it, we can use it. That's how discussions work.

Valley,

As someone who relies heavily on her ability to twist and manipulate the words contained within the bible to fit whatever argument you're trying to put forward, it's funny that you would react so virulently to someone doing the same. You have your interpretation, and I have mine.

Anyways, since you've claimed that my citations of scripture from Timothy were invalid (since it only applied to those within Ephesus), I guess your citations of 1 Timothy 1:8-10 were also irrelevant and shouldn't have been included here, eh?

But then, scripture has a different meaning when you quote it, right?

You can't POSSIBLY think by ANY stretch of the immagination that you have in ANY way "corrected me"

No way you could think that. NONE.

It's either a very bad joke....
or you are 100% dillusional.

Feel free to take part in the discussions here...
but do NOT think that you can take liberties such as "correcting me"
(correcting me for what?!!!)

You either hate me for being smarter than you...
funnier than you....
more sensible than you...
or all of the above

but that does not give you a right to talk down to me.

I tried to make peace through some humor.
Apparently "peace" is not your agenda.

too bad....

but... ummmm....
wake up.
You didn't "correct me"

How is it hypocritical? I havent twisted scriptures out of context but have spent hours in this one thread trying to explain them as as carefully as I can, according to my own understanding of them.

Columbo asked a question and I answered it, didnt I? But I also question his motives as less than kind since the point of his entire posts seemed to suggest to me that I should shut up, like the good little woman in the bible are commanded to.

Remember khaki...they are really only 6 year olds pretending to be adults...or at least that's how it appears.

And as such, those replies sound about right for that maturity level. But be careful, they may have cooties!

Let the gays do what they want in their bedrooms.

I don't want to see it. I don't want my kids to see it

I have the right to believe homosexuality is disgusting, abnormal, and wrong.

I'm sick of hearing about their sick behavior.

Freedom of speech doesn't give someone the right to be heard !!!

LAN: Well hello there! Feeling peachy today!

Too bad Val dropped out of this...there was hope of salvation for someone here I bet! Can't fault her for trying to spread the word of God in the subject matter. I was raised to believe homosexuality is a sin and wouldn't change that belief for anyone. I'm no saint and don't judge homosexuals...don't hate them....don't fear them...just not going to go against my religious beliefs in the matter. This is definitely an endless topic as no one will ever agree with everyone! Enough said by me. Take care. angel
