Senator Who Founded Earth Day Dies
Gaylord Was 89 Years Old

POSTED: 9:37 am EDT July 3, 2005
UPDATED: 9:39 am EDT July 3, 2005

MILWAUKEE -- Gaylord Nelson, a former governor and U.S. senator from Wisconsin and the founder of Earth Day, died Sunday morning. He was 89.

Nelson died at his home in Kensington, My., of cardiovascular failure.

Family spokesman and Nelson's biographer Bill Christofferson said Nelson died peacefully with his wife beside him.

Twenty-five years after the first Earth Day, April 22 is still a day on which many people plant trees, clean up trash and lobby for a clean environment.

Nelson was a conservationist years before it became fashionable. He was recognized as one of the world's foremost environmental leaders.

Then-President Clinton presented Nelson with a Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1995 for his environmental efforts.

Clinton called Nelson the father of Earth Day and the grandfather of all that grew out of that event, including the Environmental Protection Act, the Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act and the Safe Drinking Water Act.

Good man, Gaylord Nelson. I would have liked to hear what he had to say about the Bushies declaring open season on the enviornment that he so cherished.

Stan Hathaway

CHEYENNE, Wyo. (AP) _ Former Gov. Stan Hathaway, who spearheaded the creation of a trust fund to harness Wyoming's mineral wealth and established the state's first environmental restraints on mineral development, died Tuesday. He was 81.

Hathaway died at home, according to his law partner, Brent Kunz, who declined to provide details. Hathaway had been hospitalized last month for an undisclosed condition.

Hathaway served two terms as Republican governor from 1967 to 1975. He enacted the state's first severance tax on minerals mined and pumped from Wyoming, and created a permanent trust fund where severance tax money was invested, earning enough to run a major portion of the state's government operations today.

Hathaway was born in Osceola, Neb., on July 19, 1924. He interrupted his college education in 1943 to serve in the Army Air Force in World War II, flying bomber missions in Europe.

After the war, Hathaway received bachelor's and law degrees from the University of Nebraska, where he met and married his wife, Roberta "Bobby" Hathaway. She died last year.

Hathaway practiced law in Torrington until 1966, when he entered politics and was elected governor at age 42.

During his first term, the state approved the first environmental controls on its burgeoning minerals industry. He signed into law the state air quality act in 1967 and the state water quality act in 1968.

President Ford appointed Hathaway as secretary of the interior in June 1975, but he resigned the following month because of ill health. He moved to Cheyenne and resumed his law practice.

GEORGE GEDDAAssociated PressWASHINGTON - Caspar W. Weinberger, who served in the Cabinets of both Richard Nixon and Ronald Reagan and was central figure in the Iran-Contra scandal, has died at the age of 88.

"I was deeply disturbed to learn of the death of a great American and a dear friend," said former Secretary of State Colin Powell. "Cap Weinberger was an indefatigable fighter for peace through strength. He served his nation in war and peace in so many ways."

Former Rep. Gillespie V. Montgomery dies

By JACK ELLIOTT JR. Associated Press Writer

Friday, May 12, 2006 10:56 a.m. ET

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) -- Former Rep. Gillespie V. "Sonny" Montgomery, who during his 30 years in Congress pushed through a modernized GI Bill that boosted recruiting for the all-volunteer force, died Friday. He was 85.

Montgomery, who underwent surgery for a bowel obstruction in December, died at Jeff Anderson Regional Medical Center in his native Meridian after a lengthy illness, said Kyle Steward, the former congressman's spokesman. He had been hospitalized since Sunday.

On Thursday, the House voted to name a national defense authorization bill in his honor.

Gov. Haley Barbour called Montgomery "a giant" among Mississippi congressmen.

"The good he did for veterans is a national accomplishment, but he accomplished so much in so many areas that all Mississippians are grateful for his service and leadership," the governor said.
