Lloyd Bentsen

HOUSTON (AP) _ Lloyd Bentsen, the former senator and treasury secretary who as the Democrats' vice presidential nominee in 1988 famously told rival Dan Quayle he was "no Jack Kennedy," has died. He was 85.

Bentsen, who represented the state in Congress for 28 years, died Tuesday at his Houston home, his family said. He had had two strokes in 1998 and other health problems.

In the Oct. 5, 1988, vice presidential debate, Quayle said: "I have as much experience in the Congress as Jack Kennedy did when he sought the presidency."

Bentsen's retort in the televised event caused a sensation. "Senator, I served with Jack Kennedy," he said. "I knew Jack Kennedy. Jack Kennedy was a friend of mine. Senator, you're no Jack Kennedy."

Ark. Lt. Gov. Win Paul Rockefeller dies

Associated Press

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. - Lt. Gov. Win Rockefeller, the unassuming billionaire who last year abandoned a race for Arkansas governor - a post once held by his father - died Sunday after unsuccessful treatments for a blood disorder, his office said. He was 57.

Rockefeller died Sunday morning at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences with his family present, said Steve Brawner, the lieutenant governor's spokesman. Rockefeller had returned to Arkansas on July 8 from Seattle after two unsuccessful bone marrow transplants to treat a blood condition that can lead to leukemia.

Rockefeller had undergone transplants Oct. 7 and March 29 in attempts to cure an unclassified myeloproliferative disorder. The lieutenant governor notified Gov. Mike Huckabee immediately on his return to the state that he could not continue in his duties, at least temporarily.

Fire kills ex-lawmaker's granddaughter

Associated Press

SAN ANTONIO, Texas - A 5-year-old girl injured in a house fire that killed her grandfather, a former state legislator, and his mother-in-law died Saturday, hospital officials said.

Aleena Jimenez' family took the girl off life support a day after former Democratic state Sen. Frank Madla and Mary Cruz died in the blaze, said Lauren Graham, a spokeswoman for University Hospital.

Authorities said the house went up in flames after a holiday celebration that included a large display of candles.

Madla, 69, resigned in May after losing to state Rep. Carlos Uresti in the March primary. He served 20 years in the Texas House and 13 in the Senate.

Columnist Art Buchwald Dies at Age 81

By DARLENE SUPERVILLE
Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Columnist Art Buchwald, whose wry political and social satire made him a pillar of the nation's capital for more than four decades and earned him a Pulitzer Prize, has died, his son said Thursday.

Buchwald, 81, had refused dialysis treatments for his failing kidneys last year and was expected to die within weeks of moving to a hospice on Feb. 7. But he lived to return home and even write a book about his experiences.

"The last year he had the opportunity for a victory lap and I think he was really grateful for it," said son Joel Buchwald, who was with his father when he died quietly in his Washington home late Wednesday. "He had an opportunity to write his book about his experience and he went out the way he wanted to go, on his own terms."

Rep. Millender-McDonald Dies of Cancer

By PETER PRENGAMAN
Associated Press Writer

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Rep. Juanita Millender-McDonald, who fought for electoral reform and reached new heights for a black congresswoman in seven terms serving Southern California, has died. She was 68.

Millender-McDonald died of cancer late Saturday at her home in Carson, said her chief of staff, Bandele McQueen.

The congresswoman had asked for a leave of absence from the House last week to deal with her illness. McQueen couldn't immediately provide details on what form of cancer Millender-McDonald had, but said she had been receiving hospice care.

Carson Mayor Jim Dear told the Los Angeles Times that Millender-McDonald had colon cancer that had metastasized to her liver.

Millender-McDonald represented a heavily Democratic Southern California district that includes Compton, Long Beach and parts of Los Angeles. This year she became the first black woman to chair the Committee on House Administration, which oversees operations of the House and federal election procedures.

"She was a dedicated public servant who tirelessly and honorably served her country for many years," President Bush said in a statement. "We hold Rep. Millender-McDonald's family, friends, staff and constituents in our thoughts and prayers."
