Colin Powell issues thread
I wanted to start this to see what people thought about Powell possibly leaving the Admin. Then I just heard he wants to start a "war" (my term) on indecency in broadcasting!

Is it because he was stripped of all his real responsibilities that in the middle of a war on terror he wants to take on indecency?

The FCC issue is "Michael Powell", Colins son.

....and that "war" was really started by the some 200K complaints to the FCC over the incident. Granted, 200K is not much compared to all who watched the game (and the half-time show), but I would bet for every one that spoke out, there are 2 that were also upset, but just didn't bother getting on the horn to the FCC.

As a "rider" onto bassets first post....

we have mentioned Powell now and again in threads, and most seemed to hold him in a decent (if not more) regard, from what I recall.

Has Powell's "stock" dropped irreparably at this point?

No more "Powell for Prez" stickers?

IMO, Powell still holds some credibility in my eyes, but while he works for the current admin, I cannot help but feel his commitment to his job is going to hurt him in the long run, given the feelings on the Prez he works for. Guilt by association at it's best/worst.

On the one hand I would hope he does not leave the admin because I believe he holds his duty to the country in higher regard than to the Prez he works for, and that ultimately helps us, but on the other hand......

I used to think he was the most credible and honorable person in the admin. I think you are right, he is tarnished now, as you say no more Powell for prez stickers.

On Powell
I used to hold Colin Powell in high regard as an Icon of success, leadership, and incorruptability, and would have seriously considered voting for him. He's certainly been tarnished in my view.

Why didn't he resign in protest when he had the chance, he could have changed the course of history with such an action?

Eggy, that is a dilemma for me! Did he stay to try to minimize damage? Would he have exposed Bush sooner by bailing out in disgust??

So you feel what he's done is to minimize damage?

Seriously, I feel it would have been the honorable thing to do. He's had to make compromise, after compromise, and been dissed by all involved as far as I can tell. He was marginalized from the start in my opinion.

A "I didn't sign on for this" statement could have been so powerful. That's what happened during Watergate, and I've never forgotten the morality of that moment.

I don't know if he has or not, how much worse could it be? I don't know.
I was just opining on whether that may have been his intention.
