Clinton memoir due in June
Former president's work to be titled 'My Life'
Monday, April 26, 2004 Posted: 3:43 PM EDT (1943 GMT)

(CNN) -- Former President Bill Clinton's memoir, "My Life," will be published in June, according to a statement from his publisher, Alfred A. Knopf.

"My Life," according to Knopf president and editor-in-chief Sonny Mehta, "is a riveting personal drama as well as a fascinating look at the American political arena over the past four decades. ... It is the fullest and most nuanced account of a presidency ever written."

The first printing of Clinton's book will be 1.5 million copies.

The former president was reportedly given a $10 million advance for the work, a record for a nonfiction book. His wife, Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-New York), was given an $8.1 million advance for her own memoir, "Living History," which was published last June by Simon & Schuster.

If the former president's book sells in numbers equal to his wife's work, Knopf will be very happy: "Living History" was a No. 1 bestseller and has sold 1.7 million copies in hardcover. A paperback edition was released April 19.

Pundits have been wondering about the release date for Clinton's memoir for months -- some predicted that the president, who was known to work on his speeches until the last possible moment, wouldn't have it ready until late summer or early fall -- and have theorized as to its impact on the presidential race between President George W. Bush and his presumptive Democratic challenger, Massachusetts senator John Kerry.

Clinton's editor at Knopf is Robert Gottlieb, the former New Yorker editor who has edited books by Pulitzer Prize winner Robert Caro and Nobel laureate Toni Morrison.

The Associated Press reports that Gottlieb -- and Knopf -- will be on a tight schedule to issue the book, since Clinton reportedly isn't finished with the manuscript yet. Books usually take several months to go from finished manuscript to bookstore, though turnaround times have become much quicker in recent years.

Whether the book will be worth reading is another question. As presidential historian Erwin Hargrove told CNN.com in 2000, "Presidential memoirs, for which publishers pay obscene fees, are almost always bad. They are written by factories of staffers and are self-congratulatory." (See story about presidential books..)

Only Ulysses S. Grant's memoir -- which was sponsored by Mark Twain and focused largely on the Civil War general's military life -- has maintained its lustrous reputation, the AP's Hillel Italie notes.

Upon the release of the book, Clinton will embark on a national and international book tour, according to Mehta.

He was an eight year president, he presided over momentous world events, Bosnia, Kosovo, and endured eight years of relentless character assassination (deserved or not) that began within days of his inauguration, invented scandals ("filegate", "travelgate", Vince Foster", whitewater, tarmac haircut) and was forced by the GOP to testify about his private and personal sex life before a grand jury when he should have been able to spend that time on the nations business. Yes, I would like to hear what he has to say about all this because I voted for the man twice, still respect and admire him for what he accomplished in his life considering his humble origins, and am still disappointed in how he let down the entire nation, particularly his supporters, by not waiting until he was out of office to get out of wedlock harmonica jobs.

Isn't this guy rich enough? Scandals were not invented, many of his problems were his lack of "better judgment" which may not have happened if he actually spent that time on the nations business I voted for him the first time...and he actually kept a few campaign promises...I know he has a VERY persuasive way about him, Still I will never understand the blind following even in the face of evidence

No I doubt there will be more than a mention. Regardless of personal feelings it did do damage.

I'm sure the one you usually frequent will carry it, perhaps you could put in an early order.

Don't give me a straight line like that if you don't want a response. That was fun

I wonder if he intends to tell us what he wants to tell us, then proceed to tell us how we should think and feel about what he told us

I think because of the era that he was President , it should make good reading, though it will be from his viewpoint.

I would really be interested in Bush's memoirs, if he writes as well as he speaks, it would be hilarious.

Kindly elaborate on the Americanisms for we lesser mortals. Blow by blow = violence - yes?
