Saudi officials: Top al Qaeda ideologue killed
Wednesday, June 30, 2004 Posted: 4:03 PM EDT (2003 GMT)

RIYADH, Saudi Arabia (CNN) -- The man believed to be al Qaeda's top ideologue in Saudi Arabia was killed Wednesday in a shootout with Saudi police, Saudi security sources said. (What goes around comes around!}

The sources said the man was believed to have spearheaded the effort to build religious justifications for terrorist attacks in the kingdom.

The sources did not immediately release the man's name.

A policeman was also killed and six were lightly wounded, and three passers-by were lightly wounded, the sources said.

The incident began Wednesday afternoon when police, following a tip, surrounded a building about four miles (seven kilometers) from central Riyadh in the residential neighborhood of al Quds, the Saudi Press Agency said.

It was not known how many militants were inside the building or whether any civilians were inside.

On June 23, the Saudi government offered terrorists one month to surrender. The move came shortly after U.S. engineer Paul M. Johnson Jr. was kidnapped and beheaded.

Crown Prince Abdullah, speaking on state television, promised that any militant who turned himself in would be safe.

"If they are wise and they accept it, then they are saved," he said. "And if they snub it, then God is not going to forbid us from hitting them with our force, which we get from our dependence on God."

Saudi sources said the limited amnesty period is aimed at midlevel and junior al Qaeda supporters, not leaders with blood on their hands.

Othman Al-Omari, No. 19 on Saudi Arabia's list of 26 most-wanted militants, accepted the amnesty offer Monday. Shaban Al Shihri, an Al-Omari business partner, turned himself in Friday.

Al Qaeda supporters have waged a yearlong campaign of violence targeting Westerners, government sites and oil workers in the kingdom, prompting some foreigners to flee the country, the world's biggest oil exporter.

Saudi Policeman, AQ Operative Killed As AQ Says Jihad Will Continue
Jul 01, 2004
Source: Agencies

A Saudi policemen and a suspected Al-Qaida operative were killed in a heavy exchange of gunfire Wednesday in Riyadh.

The clashes, involving five alleged Al-Qaida operatives, broke out in the capital's eastern Al-Quds area after security forces discovered a house containing stocks of arms and ammunition. Two vehicles were destroyed while security forces were still pursuing a third vehicle, a policeman said.

Wednesday's was the first reported incident of unrest in the kingdom since authorities declared an official amnesty for Al-Qaeda supporters on June 23, offering to drop charges against those who turned themselves in within a month and warning that those who did not would face a harsh crackdown.

Al-Qaeda, in a statement published in the group's online newsletter, Muaskar al-Battar (Battar Camp), predicted that the amnesty will fail.

"They thought that this would offer a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity which would see a huge response, but this is not expected to happen because it seems utter failure is the fate of this attempt to stop the jihad (holy war)," the statement said.

Let those fight in the way of Allah who sell the life of this world for the other. Whoso fighteth in the way of Allah, be he slain or be he victorious, on him We shall bestow a vast reward. How should ye not fight for the cause of Allah and of the feeble among men and of the women and the children who are crying: Our Lord! Bring us forth from out this town of which the people are oppressors! Oh, give us from thy presence some protecting friend! Oh, give us from Thy presence some defender! [4:74-75]

I am American, born and raised in the Midwest. I am Muslim. What I am about to say some may or may not agree. I want it to be made known that I was totally against the Iraq Invasion and continue to be against the occupation of Iraq. I am totally against the Bush Administration and believe that it was this group who caused 9/11 and made it happen. I believe this Administration blamed Muslims for these attacks to justify the occupation of Afghanistan, Iraq and other countries. The USA has bases in many of the Muslim countries and this is not by accident. Since October 2002 I have protested, marched, given speeches. Each week I stand with a few of my fellow townspeople and protest on a corner of our little world about the policies of Bush and his company.

As an American I have the freedom to do this. I personally want to say how sorry I am for the abuse of my fellow Muslim brothers and sisters. America for years has abused and terrorized the world and has gotten away with this abuse and terrorism. I am not surprised that the punishment is now coming back to haunt the American people.

Why is America so surprised when we were attacked? We have been attacking countries for many years.

Why is America so surprised when the Iraqis begin to fight back once they realized the truth of this invasion? We killed 100's of thousands of Iraqis (the majority being children under the age of 12) since 1991 and then we are surprised when our people are killed?

Now comes the prison abuse of fellow brothers and sisters in Islam. For hours the US Congress and Senate sat and watched picture after picture of the abuse a couple of months ago. America is surprised that Islam is fighting back?

Now comes the Saudi government asking the terrorists to come back to Allah? How can these men who bow down to George W. Bush - or the other way around - Bush bowing to the Saudi government (I suggest the movie Fahrenheit 9/11 to explain this statement) - tell men who have the courage to stand up and fight for their beliefs and say enough is enough, to come back to Allah? The so-called terrorists are ones who have memorized the Quran (yet the American media says they are not educated), who say their prayers 5 times a day, and are not afraid to die in the name of Allah. How many Muslims can truthfully say they would take up arms right now and die in the name of Allah?

Islam has been attacked and it has been attacked savagely - by America and by Israel - and the Muslim leaders are so caught up in this American dream that they have forgotten the teachings of the Prophets. Would Muhammad (Peace Be Unto Him) bow to pressure or would he stand up for the teachings of Allah? Muslims are being killed by the hundreds and even thousands. Would Allah want us to stop this fight?

Inshallah if the Saudi government will give Amnesty to the fighters and not punish them for standing up for Islam. As an American and a Muslim I Pray that this is not a trap for those men who have truly stood up for what they know to be right and to say that what is happening to our fellow Muslim brothers and sisters is wrong. May Allah bless us as we spread his teachings world-wide and may Allah bless his people who have died for him.

Is that fair to fight back when only a handful of military were involved? Is it fair to take it out on ANYONE who is American because of a few Americans I myself am ashamed of? There are plenty of Americans who feel just as badly as you do about the abuse of those prisoners! But two wrongs don't make a right is what I've always been taught.

I'd like to know your answer to that question.

That's their belief....but why should innocent people such as those in the WTC be killed along with them?? Why should I have to worry about one of them killing me for nothing? I don't control my government and I don't expect to die because of their policies...but it looks like that could happen if the path this world is on doesn't change. Take care. angel

Thank you for joining us and for giving us a different perspective then either we nonMuslims have or that given by the seething AF.
I myself am married to a woman from an nonWestern culture and have had to learn to accept that there are deeply different but still real alternatives to the way I think as a westerner. I think the american "melting pot" has given it strength and the ability to rapidly assimilate its vast number of cultures. But the flip side is to insist on "melting" those who don't wish to be melted into the american candy bar.
I am curious about one thing which you lefy ambiguous which would help understand you in future posts. Is your heritage Muslim and you have migrated to the midwest. Or are you a "native" mid-westerner who has chosen to accept Islam.?
Now for the hammer. As you may see below I think there are places in the world where Muslims have in the last few years killed many times the number killed in Israel/palestine or in Iraq. These include the killing in Sudan of approximately 2 million christians and anamists; killing of tens of thousands in Indonesia in Timor and the Maluccas, and the Shira law riots in northern Nigeria. There is also the conflict in Dafur where arab Muslims are killing and raping and starving tens of thousands of black Muslims.
So if you want any respect from me for your list of charges you must first admit the blood that is one Muslim hands.
If you have not paid any attention to some of the matters I have mentioned please ask and I and some others will respond.
But if you care only about the harm done to your own people and have no heart for those your people have wronged don't expect much pity from me.

Honesty is the best policy! I always wonder about a new member whose first post happens to be in a controversial thread...what led them there...or who?

Autumn....I see in your profile that you have 3 boys....

Are you ready to strap high explosive to them and send them into the streets for Allah?

Before anybody jumps on me for being harsh to the newbie...am I the only one who smells a rat? Autumn lists being Muslim in the profile (that's a first) and hits this thread right off the bat? C'mon.....

Personally.....I have my doubts about Al-Firdaus too....
