Missing Lori Hacking Case in Utah
It's sure looking more and more like the husband has done something to Lori! A bloody knife found with dark hair on it in her home...blood reportedly all over the home...the missing mattress......the new mattress....the husband's lies about graduating college and moving to go to medical school...the husband's strange behavior, such as prancing around naked in front of a hotel....it certainly is pointing in his direction! Another Laci Peterson case in the making! The prancing part was probably to make himself look insane so he can plead insanity when he is found to have murdered Lori! Yeah I know...innocent until proven guilty!

Police Consider Missing Utah Woman's Husband "Person of Interest"

(Salt Lake City, UT) -- Detectives probing the disappearance of a pregnant woman in Salt Lake City have labeled her husband a "person of interest." Detective Dwayne Baird says there's evidence that would indicate there was "some deception" in Mark Hacking's life, leading to the designation, but that doesn't mean he's a suspect. Lori Hacking has been missing since Monday. The couple was supposed to move to North Carolina this week, where Mark said he would be attending medical school. But Mark and Lori's parents said they learned Wednesday that Mark never applied to medical school.

New development in this sad case. It appears the police have found a bloodied knife w/hair in the Hacking apartment. The family of the missing girl will not give anymore interviews. So it appears that things have started to resolve. This guy is really a wacko.

AP: Missing Woman Said Sobbing After Call

By PAUL FOY
Associated Press Writer

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- Three days before her husband reported her missing, Lori Hacking took a phone call at work that left her stunned and sobbing, her colleagues at a brokerage house told The Associated Press.

Several colleagues said Hacking had been arranging for on-campus housing at the University of North Carolina medical school and that they believe the school was returning a call to say her husband, Mark Hacking, was not enrolled there, as he had told her.

Lori Hacking left work early after receiving the call Friday afternoon, July 16. Mark Hacking reported his wife's disappearance the following Monday. She is now feared dead, and her husband has become the focus of the police investigation.

At the time of her disappearance, the couple were packing to move to North Carolina. But after she vanished, police and family members learned that besides lying about being accepted to medical school, Mark Hacking had not even graduated from college.

Mark Hacking, a 28-year-old nightshift hospital orderly, has been at a psychiatric hospital since police found him running around naked in sandals the night after the search for his wife began. Police refused to say whether he was being held involuntarily.

His family has hired defense attorney D. Gilbert Athay, who said Monday he has spoken to Hacking many times since being hired Thursday. He refused to characterize the conversations.

Lori Hacking, a 27-year-old trading assistant who just learned she was five weeks pregnant, was a private woman who did not share personal troubles, making her breakdown in the office all the more unusual, said colleagues at Wells Fargo Securities Services.

"She was visibly upset. She started to cry and got up to walk away," her supervisor, Randy Church, told the AP on Monday. He said that when co-workers asked her what was wrong, she replied, "It's no big deal; I'm OK. But I think I will go home."

Lori Hacking's co-workers gave accounts of the phone call to homicide detectives after she was reported missing. Officials at the University of North Carolina were trying to determine whether one of their administrators made the call.

"We wouldn't have any reason to doubt" the Wells Fargo employee accounts, Detective Dwayne Baird said Monday. He would not comment further, but later dismissed suggestions an arrest was imminent.

"Our most important focus in this case is the fact we have a missing person and, coupled with that, it's under very, very suspicious circumstances," he said.

Church said detectives showed up at Wells Fargo the day after Hacking's disappearance and inspected her e-mail and computer files.

Lori Hacking's mother, Thelma Soares, was unaware her daughter had received the upsetting phone call, but did not get a chance to speak to her the weekend before she vanished, family spokesman Scott Dunaway said.

Results on some of the evidence collected by police, including a mattress recovered from a trash bin and a box spring taken from the couple's apartment, could come back from a laboratory this week.

Brandon Hodge, another trading assistant, said that at about 10 a.m. on Monday, July 19, Mark Hacking placed a call to his wife's office, speaking first to Hodge.

"By the way, how is Lori?" Hodge quoted Hacking as asking. Hodge said he replied, "Well, she's not made it into work yet."

Church, who had been expecting Lori Hacking at 7 a.m. and says she was never late to work, then took the phone. He recalled Mark Hacking saying his wife had not returned from a sunrise jog at Memory Grove, a downtown park near the office. Hacking made it seem as if he was calling from his apartment, Church said.

"Oh, my God, her (work) clothes are still here," Hacking reportedly said to Church.

"I said, `You need to call police immediately. Just get off the phone,'" Church said.

But Hacking did not immediately call police, and police say he was at a store buying a new mattress shortly before reporting his wife missing.

Three of her co-workers who spoke to the AP said they showed up at Memory Grove before Mark Hacking joined them. When he arrived in his Dodge Durango, they told him his wife already had been reported missing. He then placed a call of his own to police dispatchers.

Hacking began an aimless search, walking and pondering before taking off on his own and abandoning Lori's co-workers. But first, he sat in his sport utility vehicle with an address book on his lap, making calls, apparently to relatives.

Another interesting twist in the case! Hmmm....I wonder what info he gave the families:

1.) Where he hid her body.

2.) Where she really is if alive.

I'd guess #1!

Families: Search For Missing Woman No Longer Necessary
Statement Says Husband Provided Information

POSTED: 1:24 am EDT August 1, 2004
UPDATED: 1:51 am EDT August 1, 2004

SALT LAKE CITY -- Relatives of a missing woman and her husband said late Saturday that the husband has given them information that prompted them to call off a volunteer search for the woman.

The families' statement did not reveal what Mark Hacking told them.

Investigators said they had not yet heard from the Hackings' relatives and were trying to reach them.

"If they've got information that's breaking, that's something we need to hear about." Detective Phil Eslinger told The Associated Press late Saturday.

Eslinger said detectives were trying to arrange a meeting with the family members, but he could not confirm a report that relatives were headed to the Salt Lake police department.

Lori Hacking, 27, has been missing since July 19, when Mark Hacking told authorities that she failed to return from an early morning jog.

Lori Hacking's father, Eraldo Soares, said late Saturday that he was unaware of any new information about his daughter.

"I think it's crazy that they raise my hopes and chop me down," Soareas said, speaking from his home in California.

Soares has complained bitterly about not getting information from police. He said his updates on the case have come from reporters.

Police said they are planning a news conference Sunday.

The organized search for Lori Hacking was called off by the families earlier this week, a decision they said was made out of concern for the volunteers' safety. The search had permeated neighborhoods, industrial areas and canyons near the park where Lori Hacking was said to have been jogging the morning she was reported missing.

Since that day, Mark Hacking's credibility has crumbled amid revelations that he lied to his wife about enrolling at medical school in North Carolina and about graduating from the University of Utah.

Mark Hacking, 28, was checked into a psychiatric ward by his family after being found outside, naked, a night after the search for his wife began.

Hacking, who has not been charged, became the police's sole focus after it was learned he was at a store buying a new mattress just before reporting his wife was missing. Authorities were later seen removing a box spring from the couple's apartment. Investigators have refused to confirm reports that they found a mattress in a nearby trash bin.

A blurb from Fox:

Police said they are planning a news conference Sunday.

Police are more certain missing pregnant woman Lori Hacking was killed after recovering a mattress belonging to her and her husband, FOX News has learned.

The mattress had marks on it, sources close to the investigation said, but no blood was found. Investigators believe a tarp or some other type of liquid-proof covering may have been placed on the mattress, indicating premeditation.

"Something was done to the mattress which indicates to authorities she was killed there," a source told FOX News. (Probably stab or slash marks!)

Police have begun to suspect the body of Lori Hacking, 27, was placed in some kind of tarp and disposed of. They have spent the week digging through a municipal landfill and using cadaver dogs, a task complicated by the volume of garbage at the site and searing heat, Deseret Morning News reported.

Police also told the paper that a Dumpster had been confiscated as evidence in the case.

Sources also told FOX News that police believe Lori Hacking's husband Mark used a knife to kill her in their apartment. There was evidence of a struggle, which police purposely have not released.

Testing on a bloody knife taken from the apartment could take several weeks. The delay is due to a backlog at the medical examiner's apartment as well as the fact that Lori Hacking was adopted, a crime lab official has said.

Police believe Lori Hacking confronted her husband after discovering he had lied about graduating from college and being accepted to medical school. The Hackings had located an apartment in Chapel Hill near the University of North Carolina, where Mark Hacking said he was enrolled, and were set to move there the week after Lori disappeared.

That scenario may fit with an earlier theory that Lori Hacking died in a "rage killing." Mark Hacking, 28, had actively deceived his wife and family for years, going as far as leaving textbooks lying around the apartment to keep them convinced of his scholarly ambitions.

And in the hours that he was supposedly studying for medical exams, Hacking often was hanging out at a neighborhood store — refilling sodas, eating hot-dogs and smoking Camel menthols.

Hacking never was on track to become a doctor, nor is he a therapist as had been widely reported. State records show he is a licensed health care assistant, a job he resigned July 23. The University of Utah says health care assistants start at $8.42 an hour.

Just days before Mark Hacking reported his wife missing, Lori received a phone call at the office that prompted her to leave work early, sobbing and visibly upset, co-workers told police.

Mark Hacking reported his wife missing July 19, telling police that she'd gone for an early morning jog and hadn't returned. It was later discovered that while he was supposedly sleeping, he had actually gone out to purchase a new mattress.

The following day he was hospitalized in the psychiatric unit where he worked as an orderly after he was found naked outside a motel. He later retained high-profile attorney Gil Athay.

Police are still calling Mark Hacking a "person of interest," but legal analysts told FOX News that hospitalization may be the only thing keeping him from police custody at the moment. Police believe they have a strong case for murder, even without the body.

Sources close to the investigation also told FOX News that Mark Hacking is sticking to his story that his wife went jogging the morning she disappeared. Police believe Lori Hacking never made it to the park that day, and sources said Mark has not been cooperative since hiring an attorney.

I'm with you. Thought it likely to be foul play on his part, and since he is an outstandingly sociopathic person, the looney act would be par for the course. Wait till he comes up with the "It was her fault, she made me do it" defense.

Hi MaryAnn: He's already done the "acting crazy" part..probably orchestrated by his attorney! He probably got mad because she knew he was a liar and called him on it! Apparently it now looks as though the murder was premeditated! I wish he would have just confessed from the start so her body could have been found intact and able to be viewed in her casket by her family. In that landfill they might never find Lori....what an awful place to end up...but she isn't there...her soul is in Heaven along with her unborn baby's.... Take care. Marlene (angel)

Searchers Looking For Lori Hacking Find Remains In Landfill
Not Immediately Clear If Remains Were Those Of Hacking

POSTED: 12:46 pm EDT October 1, 2004
UPDATED: 2:52 pm EDT October 1, 2004

SALT LAKE CITY -- Authorities say it'll take a while to determine whether remains found in a landfill are those of a missing Utah woman.

A volunteer found what police say appear to be human remains in a Salt Lake City landfill where they've been searching for Lori Hacking.

Utah authorities plan to hold a news conference at 3 p.m. Central.

It's not immediately clear whether the remains are those of Hacking, whose husband, Mark, has been charged in her death. Lori Hacking hasn't been seen since July 18.

"If in fact this is Lori's remains, the fact that we are able to bring that family some closure, that is excellent for us to be able to do that for them," Salt Lake City Police Detective Phil Eslinger said.

Police said it will take two weeks of testing to confirm whether the remains are human. A prosecutor said it will take "a while" for identification.

Authorities have spent weeks combing through 4,600 tons of trash for any sign of the missing woman. Searchers at the 550-acre landfill concentrated on a portion about the size of a football field, going through compacted garbage 20 feet deep. They plan to continue searching other sections of the landfill while the remains are analyzed.

Officers have said they were bothered by the thought that Lori Hacking's final resting place may be a landfill and were willing to pour through the landfill to find her remains.

Mark reported Lori missing on July 19, saying she never returned from a morning jog. He said because he works the night shift he was usually sleeping when Lori left to go running in the morning. He said she usually woke him so he could drive her to work, but that the day Lori disappeared he woke up late and realized she hadn't returned.

Mark Hacking allegedly later confessed to his brothers that he shot his wife while she slept -- and that he disposed of her body, the weapon and a mattress in a trash bin.

An affidavit states that investigators found blood on the couple's headboard and bed rail. Court papers say those blood samples matched traces of blood found in Lori Hacking's car. Police took a box spring and several boxes full of items from the Hackings' apartment. They also impounded a mattress recovered from a nearby trash bin.

Early on, a neighbor said someone might have used a nearby trash bin to dispose of a body. The neighbor based that conclusion on a foul-smelling liquid in the bottom of the bin after Lori Hacking was reported missing.

Authorities believe Lori Hacking was killed after learning that her husband was not enrolled in medical school in North Carolina, even though they were packing to move there.

Mark Hacking has already been charged in Lori's murder. He is being held on $1 million bail at the Salt Lake County jail.

Police Find Utah Woman's Body in Landfill

By PAUL FOY
Associated Press Writer

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- Police found Lori Hacking's body in a landfill Friday after picking through the trash for weeks in a search for the young Utah woman allegedly murdered by her husband.

The state medical examiner's office used dental records to identify the remains about six hours after they were discovered.

"It means everything to us to find Lori's mortal remains so that we might lay them to rest with dignity," Hacking's parents, Eraldo and Thelma Soares, said in a statement.

The discovery came on the 33rd working day of a search of 4,600 tons of garbage. Over the past weeks, investigators used cadaver dogs and brought in garden rakes to comb through the trash. About 20 law enforcement found the remains on Friday.

Hacking, 27, had not been seen since July 18. Her husband, Mark Hacking, reported her missing the following day, saying she never returned from a morning jog.

While he was hospitalized in a psychiatric unit, he allegedly confessed to his brothers that he shot his wife while she was sleeping and disposed of her body, the weapon and a mattress in a trash bin. He was charged with murder and jailed on $1 million bail.

Police Chief Rick Dinse said the remains found "were not all intact."

The remains were found among trash that included newspapers dated July 16-19, the weekend Lori Hacking disappeared. Investigators also found business envelopes indicating they were from the University of Utah Research Park area where Mark Hacking worked and where prosecutors believed he dumped the body in the trash.

Neither Mark Hacking's parents nor his lawyer immediately returned calls for comment.

Investigators' hopes of finding the body had diminished in recent weeks. The search of landfill had been tedious, with each day presenting searchers and dogs with 300 or more tons of trash to sort through.

"Landfill searches are historically unsuccessful," Dinse said. "Needle in a haystack may not even adequately describe it."

What a coward: he played a role for everyone and even murdered his wife to keep up the act. I'll bet he's sorry now.
