What assault weapon would you buy?
With things going the way they are I am again considering buying an assault weapon to keep for a rainy or violent day.
I reaaly would like some suggestions for what to buy.
I am thinking of an AK 47 but will ammo be readily available.?
A neighbor who believes that "Mad Max" is acoming is also talking about burying a few good bows and lots of steel arrowheads but I feel that is a little much

I haven't been to a gun show recently Paul, quite a while really.
Cost of ammo is a item to check out. If you like to target practice, it can make a difference in expenses.
Back in the day, I was firing a Ruger 223 mini 14. The ammo got quite expensive.
I found a bargain in an SKS and cheap Norinco ammo. AK 47's may look cool, but the ammo I believe is the same and at the time an SKS new went for less than $100 and an AK about $350 -400.
The SKS is a nice semi auto and doesn't carry the visual stigma the AK does.
I don't even know availability today, but $ wise it's worth checking out.

I do really like firing the Ruger on a range.

Never fired an AK.........

Seriously, if you are considering home defense you should probably take a look at a 1911 style .45apc or a .40 cal. Both are automatics. If you are accosted in your home you have more mobility with a pistol and it is not as easy to grab from you in close quarters. I would prefer a Kimber in the .45 and a Glock in a .40 cal.

A shotgun would be nice too and a simple Mossberg 12 gauge pump will do the trick and is affordable.

I cannot stress strongly enough that you take a firearms course to learn how to handle and use the weapons you choose safely and you should practice with them on a regular basis.

The Colt AR-15. I had two during my Bail Bonds days. They are easy to shoot, the girls love them for they don't "kick", the rounds are cheap in (comparison anyway) and they really look cool. They also have to be the most recognizable form factor in America!

A bad guy catches site of it and the first thing they think is Machine Gun!

An extra plus is that someone shot with AR-15 once has a better chance to survive than an AK-47 or it's variants!

But as I told a Tennessee Detective once who asked “what” was my favorite weapon of choice? I told him my 145 pound Rottweiler!

My Rott was the ultimate BS eliminator! The bad guy might think I won’t shoot him, he might think he can out run me, he might even think he can kick my A$$ but not one of them thought that dog wouldn’t bite them, that they could out run him or that they could kick his A$$! Just too mean!

But they need a big yard and lots of love!

It would be kinda hard for me to shoot pistol competitions with my penis.

For home defense I recommend a Naval Stainless Steel 12 Gauge pump Shotgun (Mossberg has a nice one). Their cheap (in comparision anyway). They don't rust. The little kids can't arm them (assuming you are smart enough not to have a round chambered) and there is NOTHING that scares a Burglar at night as much as the "Clink Chunk" of a 12 gauge round being chambered! They all know that sound and it is hard to miss!

A pistol general doesn’t scare the Bad Guys they see their buddies everyday with a pistol shot scar! A Rifle is to hard to use well in a confined space and the round can pass through too many walls!

Again a Naval Stainless Steel 12 Gauge pump Shotgun is what you need for Home Defense! And make sure the “Ladies” know how to use it! Makes the bag guys be realy polite to a little lady! Please don't shoot me with that Shotgun Ma'am!

Still when it comes to fun, impressing the girls or defending your neighborhood nothing beats an Assault Rifle! 2 30 round Mag's Suicide taped

PLS- just so you know that I didn't misunderstand your original question, I wouldn't buy an assault weapon. They look cool and serve the purpose for which they were designed but I don't think that the average person needs one since there are so many other more affordable choices that will suit most peoples needs. This of course is my opinion and others may disagree.

If I had all the money in the world I'd buy every assault weapon and do what the police do with the ones they confiscate...melt them down!

Angel

But then only the Bad Guys would have Assault Rifles! Worse they would come steal all your money!

The "Cops" got theirs, the "Bad Guys" got theirs, why can't we have "ours"?
