18 year old gets 6mo-2yrs for streaking at graduation

I think this is really harsh.

What do y'all think? Is this a proper sentence?
I think they should give him half a month at most and cut him loose.

High School Streaker Gets Up to 2 Years
Friday, October 15, 2004

TOWANDA, Pa. — A high school graduate was sentenced to up to two years in jail for streaking the graduation ceremony from which he had been excluded.

Russell Chmieleski (search), 18, pleaded guilty to first-degree indecent exposure (search) and must serve six months to two years. Because the charge is a misdemeanor, he can stay in a county jail, rather than state prison.

The first-degree charge was made because children were in the crowd when Chmieleski ran across the football field where the Towanda High School (search) graduation ceremony was held in June.

Police said Chmieleski was upset that school officials excluded him from the ceremony because he graduated in January.

This is probably the most riduiculous bit of news I've seen in weeks!
Way too harsh...no time, maybe a fine if "they" must.
We had a streaker in high school. Won't name him, but it was the best fun ever!
He jogged all through the halls with a paper bag on his head then headed out to the school yard. An old (female) teacher was the one that identified him...we still giggle 30 years later, wondering how she knew it was him .
The dude died a few years ago, I think, but it likely wasn't from "exposure"

It's a good testament to how conservative the U.S. has become over the last thirty years. I still remember(vaguely) that guy who streaked at the academy awards thirty years ago. Streaking was a "fad" for a short time in the seventies. There was streaking parties for god's sake. But the fear and paranoia over crime and criminal behaviour has led to a sledge hammer approach in the U.S. public and justice system. Shortly after Colombine happened a story came out of a 6 or 7 year old being suspended from school for pointing a chicken finger at a teacher and saying "bang bang". There seems to be in my view a general hysteria over crime in the U.S. that is being slowly fermented for the wealth it generates from gun sales, burglar alarm sales, etc. to shows like Cops and Fox "news" headlines that go something like "He was a quiet man who lived alone, but his neighbors never knew the dark secret he was hiding....next at five".

I think America needs a million man/woman streaking march.

A harsh punishment for sure, one that could be fought in the courts.

I wouldn't generalize it quite as much as Mari, though. Sort of a broad conclusion to come to after one harsh ruling. Imagine what would have happened were he an Afghani under Taliban rule streaking past veiled women!

What ever happened to a night in jail and a fine?

Is this what we've come to? Is America become so conservative that the naked human body is considered as big as a crime? What's next, burkas?
