Question current debate on women and their scientific abilities
There are saying that women are not has good at scientific abilities has man is this right And also saying they should get less pay

Quote:
NEW YORK (Reuters) - The current debate on women and their scientific abilities has missed the central point that scientists are made, not born, economists at the Federal Reserve (news - web sites) Bank of Dallas wrote in an opinion piece in The New York Times on Monday.

The authors, Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas chief economist W. Michael Cox and Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas economist Richard Alm, wrote that scientific knowledge requires years of education, and what matters are the choices and opportunities open to young women at universities.

"Clearly, debating whether women are intellectually equipped for sciences makes little sense. Women themselves have already settled the issue, one degree at a time," the authors said.

Harvard University President Lawrence Summers, a well-known economist and former U.S. treasury secretary, drew harsh criticism last month when he suggested women may not have the same natural ability in math and science as men.

The authors say in the editorial piece that in the early 1970's, women received less than 10 percent of all graduate degrees in law, medicine, and veterinary medicine, and they were below 20 percent in pharmacy.

Today, they said women earn about two-thirds of the degrees in veterinary medicine and pharmacy; they are approaching 50 percent in law, and have topped 40 percent in medicine.

"There are of course still a few hot-button issues concerning gender and employment: equality in pay, maternity leave, flexible time for family commitments. But in terms of education and opportunity, women are getting ever closer to a level playing field," the economists said

In the past, women were discouraged from certain types of careers. Girls were encouraged to be home makers. This has been rapidly changing. I have a friend with three daughters. One is an airline pilot, one is a dentist with 2 dentists working for her, and the other is a fire fighter. All are married, with children. She taught her daughters that they could do anything if they tried.

Some women, like some men, have scientific talent, they just need to step forward and get out of the kitchen.

In my mind it is simple: if a woman has the same level of skill as a man, she should get the same salary. She should not be unfairly advantaged or disadvantaged just because other women aren't as good in that particular field.

Well, maybe if the wench would stay home where she belongs so she could clean that glass ceiling better!

JUST KIDDING!!!

Ok, seriously, seems strange that girls, on average, do so much better than boys in grade school in math, etc., but then seems that they fall out in later years. I know in engineering, the ratio of male to female was terrible [unless you were a female... ]. Generally, it is harder for a lady, esp. in later years when there is a child and/or spouse in their life, to keep a scientific or any career, due to family demands, etc.

firemat, I think actually the article is saying the opposite of your statement... that women have been conquering the myth that they can't get degrees in such subjects, AND that their pay compared to men does stink.

Wasn't there another thread pertaining to this subject a couple months ago?

rupac, unless you are trying to say that women are nothing more than trojan horses, I think that you might want to delete this post and place it instead in appropriate section so it would be better seen by those that can actually help you.

Here I am, now, what are you going on about????

Listen, Women can do what they want, when they want, why they want because simply put, we can !!!

We can have a very successful career in any Scientific field we want, and get equal pay for it, because if we don't we have a "Sister" in the legal field that will sue your butt off and then one who is a Dr. sew it back on for ya. All this done while, still taking care of a family and a home, doing everything while you sit and watch something stimulating on tv or your computer. AND Still, we would have time to clean that glass ceiling of Hobbes the cat.

You guys try it sometime
