Should movies be rated R for smoking?
I know that smoking is bad for my health (I do not do it, a few years too young anyways), but there is a group that believes that besides putting anti-smoking ads, and making sure people know that the actos weren't payed extra for smoking ( which of all things are very good ideas, in my opinion), they want to make any movie with smoking in it, no matter how small a scene it is, rated R just for that because of a study that shows that teens are influenced by actors in movies that smoke.

http://www.smokefreemovies.ucsf.edu/.../r_rating.html

Do you think this is a good idea, or does this go too far, and balances on the line of being unconstitutional?

Note the euphemism they use, "age-classifies" :

It doesn't censor. It age-classifies.
Isn't age-classification in this example censorship based on age group?

Wow there would be alot of old time classics that are Rated R. "It's a Wonderful Life" would have to be rated NC17 for not only does it have smoking in it but George (the main character/hero) gets drunk and plows into a tree with his car.

Not to mention all the movies that are G/PG/PG-13 that would be rated R just because people smoke. Examples include 101 Dalmations, Apollo 13, Titanic, Airpane! (both 1, and 2), Superman, the list goes on and on.

or Rated B for "Big Brother," since if idiotic things like this pass, it will further re-instate this notion into people's skin that a "Big Brother" authority is trying to control aspects of their life for them.

... but "Rated S for Stupid" would work well too.

So, do you think movies with smoking should be rated R just for that?

I say, show snti-smoking ads before/after, but making a movie rated R for smoking is absurd.

It's all about a war on smokers. In my state smokers are taxed and taxed with another $1.00 per pack tax proposed, making them the highest priced cigerettes in the nation. I don't smoke but I find this unfair war on smokers wrong! But I don't want to be dragged into some strange debate about that. I see several holier than thou uptight anal people trying to cleanse the earth of all bad things. Whether they just got a job fresh out of college and want to make thier mark by peeing on smokers or people that just have a stick up their bums regardless of what it is. The problem is that there are many vices of individuals, smoking just happens to be the easiest target. I have heard from all sides and I don't like to smell it. But I also think it's the right of the individual, especially since each and every one of us has Habit issues. We can pick apart everything unhealthy, hell why not sue other car owners for making me inhale exhaust fumes everyday I go out for a drive etc.. etc.. etc. etc. ?

Lame idea.

My wife watches Lifetime - all the time - and there's more sexual content in those than most R rated movies.

I guess liberals just don't have enough to do with their time.

Like the Alabama lawmaker who wants to ban books positively portraying gays?

They tried that BS in Arkansas too:

Note: I am not gay, but I do support the right for the homosexuals/lesbians to marry.

Rate a movie "R" because it has smoking in it and allow murder and mayhem to stay out of that category! How idiotic will it get before all this political correctness ends.
