Try power and control. It makes them feel virile. Notice that women don't seem to get involved in this too much.

How do you manage to know this?

They don't say who created these things.

Alan

The ones who have been caught have been profiled. Trust me. These dudes aren't exactly the most popular kids on the playground!

They're bored and can't think of anything better to do than disrupt other's lives!

Jack: I think you're right....I can't recall a woman being caught...mostly teenage boys and "teenage acting" men!

I knew a demented hacker at work. He was a crazy guy and not too smart - tho very likable - and he was always calling me over to a computer. He'd whisper, "Man check this out!" look around to make sure none of "the squares" were nearby and with a semi-crazed grin open a site with videos of people being run over by cars or being tortured by Third World police or soldiers. He'd crack up gleefully and say, "Man is that radical or what???" He also often bragged about how many people whose machines he'd wrecked. whose files he'd wiped out with viruses, trojans malware or all three. One day he offered to show me how he did it. He opened a site. I forget the name but it displayed various viruses etc. You simply clicked on the one you wanted to send and then wrote in the person's email address. That was it.

I felt like a kid discovering there was no Santa. Like that old song goes, "Ya mean that's all there is?"

I told my buddy he was "a total idiot." He cracked up laughing and said proudly, "I know, dude!"

It's a power trip. Usually its a younger kid, discovering computers. All it takes is the desire to learn, which younger people have more of it seems. My exploits started out by being a victim of "punters" on AOL, during the first few months when we had internet access when I was in elementary school. Being a victim turned into wanting to "punt" other people. I got kicked off of AOL shortly after that, hehehe... After that, its like a rabbit hole. It just depends on how far and how much trouble you want to stir. Once we had a different service provider I started getting into cracking IRC chat rooms, and defacing websites, and then trojan attacks to gain access to other computers. I never was much for rampant destruction through viruses though, thats for losers! LOL

It's actually a really good way to learn things about computers. If it wasn't for my past exploits I wouldn't have a job working on computer hardware and doing network admin stuff. My boss actually wants me to try and break into some of our machines to test security, so its not like all hackers are social rejects that are violent or devious people. The term "hacker" is actually very generic and originally was a term coined to people who broke into phone lines and practiced forms of identity theft. Those are very diff. things than run of the mill denial of service attacks or email bombing.
