Court: DVD Copy Protection Violated Privacy
Makes you wonder what will happen now in the states. As some people will look at this and say. If it is good enough for them, it is good enough for us.

Tuesday, April 26, 2005

PARIS — A French court has ordered DVD vendors to pull copies of the David Lynch film "Mulholland Drive" (search) off store shelves in France as part of an unprecedented ruling against copy protection techniques.

The appeals court ruled that copy prevention software (search) on the DVD violated privacy rights in the case of one consumer who had tried to transfer the film onto a video cassette for personal use.

The ruling could be a major setback for the DVD (search) industry, which places lock software on disks as part of its battle against illegal copying — cited for millions of dollars in losses each year.

Then he should have bought it on a VCR tape in the first place! And how does one know if he was REALLY doing that for personal use! It's pretty bad when those who make DVD's can't even protect their own copyrights by installing copy prevention software! Another can of worms opened! Sheesh!

Maybe he has both a DVD player and a VCR. The VCR say, in the bedroom, and wanted to watch the movie there...why should he NOT be allowed to copy the movie to a VHS tape to watch it there? Or should he be forced to buy two copies of every movie he owns?

Personally I have a few DVDs that my DVD player has difficulty playing, I want to copy them onto new discs so that I can actually watch the movies I paid for.

Oh, but isn't removing our freedom to use items we bought also a slippery slope?

Why should the freedoms of the honest person be revoked because of the criminal? Punish the criminals, leave the honest people alone.

Here's hoping that eventually they reach the same conclusion on DVD and game regions, something which I feel has less of a valid reasoning than protection software.

The movie industry had the same arguments when VCR technology was brand new. They screamed that the copying of movies would bankrupt the industry. Now home video is their largest cash crop.

Makes no difference to me what they do. I have programs that will rip anything I want copywrite or no. I bought/paid for the Cd or DVD, what I do with personal use is my business and they can kiss my pootootey! The only greasy slope is the forehead of the RIAA.

Nice to know we can agree on a few things.
