Response From Amnesty
As a donor to Amnesty International, I wrote the regarding the Gulag nonsense.
This is what I got back:

Thank you for your letter of concern and dismay. I agree with you about
that choice of phrase in the Preface to the report and truly wish some
other word had been used. But I hope people will read some of the country
reports in the Library of www.amnesty.org, to see what AI and its members
are doing to protect the rights of people in more than 150 countries. We
appreciate your comments and take them seriously.

I wrote them back and said that their apology would not suffice---and that yes, I understand that they are "catholic" on their attacks on human rights abuses. I suggested that they fire Schultz, but have not heard back from them. If they don't, I will no longer give money to them.

I am in total agreement with your assessment of the situation. I'm glad to hear you are not going to send them monetary support in the future. I don't think the ones who made the gulag comparison really knew what a gulag was.

You may be surprised to hear this from me, but even though I trulky believe that AI is a left leaning political organization, I still think they are a force for good around the world.

They can gore my ox if they want, so long as they keep it reasonable and fair. The gulag comment was so far out of bounds that their credibility has a gap wider that Mike Tyson and David Letterman's front teeth combined.

Linsky, I would suggest that you remain a donor and that you keep in contact with them to keep them honest.

Lan, I'm tempted to deep six them only because I dont think it takes much to apologize--you know, a little less ego and a little more humanity. I think that Schultz has to be deep sixed in order to maintain an ethical standard for the organization.

You may be right, but hundreds of thousands of children still count on AI for their reports.
Their reports have carried weight for decades, causing the more wealthy nations to take notice.
It S T I N K S that they would sham themselves up in this way.

But they need to get back on track. Make a FULL AND COMPLETE AND GLOBAL APOLOGY and get back into the lifesaving business that they have been known for in the past.

I agree, douchebag Shultz should be fired immediately, and publicly.

AI needs to keep the politics (read lying) out of their reports.
