Vietnam vs Iraq
As I watch the news after work each night I get angrier and sadder...

It becomes more and more obvious that nothing was learned from the mess called Vietnam...

We are involved in yet another no win situation...

I'm going out for an evening motorcycle ride, when I come back I think maybe I will take my TV outside and smash it into little pieces

That is the history of mankind - one Vietnam after another - since the beginning. And no, man will never learn because he's programmed that way.

buck, I too get sadder and angrier.
I think people did learn from Viet-Nam, just not enough to stop this.
9-11 and all the emotion--patriotism--and desire for revenge made it impossible. We were outnumbered and dimissed as anti-American, a lost cause.
It will end somewhat the way Viet-Nam war did, only worse IMO. With a great loss in all ways---esp our priceless youth. >f

The Greeks called it Hubris---and it has repeated itself throughout history. Our Hubris is that we think that we can engineer democracy. I remember a day in Nam, when we were boxed in by the enemy, but we didn't know where the enemy was---we could see the traces from the firearms, but when we aimed in that direction, the traces mysteriously moved. That in a nutshell is Iraq. I am pretty sure that if GWB had actually fought for this country, he wouldn't have been so fast to put our 18 year olds in harm's way. If he had any knowledge of the Middle East, and the multitude of tribes, religious affiliations and personal vendetas, he might have found a better way to fight the Islamo-fascist scourge. As time goes by, machismo, and this sickening theory that we somehow do honor to those who have died in Iraq by staying there, will remain entrenched. The sad part of it is that so many families will have been destroyed by the actions of an irresponsible madman. Yes, we didn't learn a damn thing from Viet Nam. In this case, history is repeating itself. I just hope that it doesn't take 50,000 casualities to make the chicken hawks see this.

You took exactly what I wanted to say and articulated it much better than I possibly could have.

So the dead 1933 men and women ( all ) US citizens really didn't exist. I'd hate to have to tell that to their families. Oh, and what about your allies and all the citizens of Iraq. I guess they never existed either.

Sarge, you might want to go through the list of names to see if there was someone you didn't know.

Wars are senseless but this one takes the cake. If in fact is actually happening.

Its considerably more then 1933---closer to 1800---Then you have to factor in the huge number of the wounded--some of who will carry those wounds for the rest of their lives. As these guys get killed and maimed, the chicken hawks are having barbacues in Crawford---Just amazing stuff----After Nam, I thought that any president, either republican or democrat, would be very leery of getting involved in this kind of conflict. I was wrong.

LOL_-losing it----a little bleery-eyed this morning! I didn't even know it was as high as 1933---Maybe it is psychological--you know not wanting to see those numbers go higher my subconcious keeps sticking with 1800! Besides Sarge, we haven't had any of the room right wingers comment on Iraq in awhile. Its seems that they either understand that their position is not easily defended, or events have pretty much shown them that Iraq is lost.

The CIA has so often in the past utilized coups, blatant economic warfare, proxy armies and the like, and payoffs to oficer cliques to destabilize then attempt to (and often succed at) overthrowing FOREIGN governments- from Iran to Guatemala to Nicaragua to Cuba to Venezuela to Indonesia to the Belgian Congo to Angola to Greece, etc, etc,. Now I hear the company is SO pissed at the current administration (over outing a covert agent for a petty political agenda) and for shifting the blame on WMD lies to Tenet rather than the White house pack of gangsters and criminals- I would not shed a tear if the CIA somehow engineered a coup RIGHT HERE and put some level headed people in charge of the executive branch. It's high time for this greed and madness to end. Some genius at the company HAS to be seriously considering this, mark my words- they have poisons that can induce heart attacks and be metabolized before the autopsy.
