Thumbs down San Francisco shuns USS Iowa
SF Moonbats Shun USS Iowa

As you read this, please remember that we are not allowed to question these people’s loyalty to the US, and that they really do support the troops (even though their every action demonstrates the opposite): San Francisco Shuns Retired USS Iowa.

Quote:
SAN FRANCISCO - The USS Iowa joined in battles from World War II to Korea to the Persian Gulf. It carried President Franklin Roosevelt home from the Teheran conference of allied leaders, and four decades later, suffered one of the nation’s most deadly military accidents.

Veterans groups and history buffs had hoped that tourists in San Francisco could walk the same teak decks where sailors dodged Japanese machine-gun fire and fired 16-inch guns that helped win battles across the South Pacific.

Instead, it appears that the retired battleship is headed about 80 miles inland, to Stockton, a gritty agricultural port town on the San Joaquin River and home of California’s annual asparagus festival.

Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., a former San Francisco mayor, helped secure $3 million to tow the Iowa from Rhode Island to the Bay Area in 2001 in hopes of making touristy Fisherman’s Wharf its new home.

But city supervisors voted 8-3 last month to oppose taking in the ship, citing local opposition to the Iraq war and the military’s stance on gays, among other things.

“If I was going to commit any kind of money in recognition of war, then it should be toward peace, given what our war is in Iraq right now,” Supervisor Ross Mirkarimi said.

It is my opinion that San Francisco doesn't deserve the honor anyway.

PS--this is a joke--not gay bashing--those of you who know me, know I am extremely sympthetic to gay issues, so spare me the inevitable liberal lecture.

Ummm... one question comes to mind, $3 mill to tow? Granted there is somethings that need to be done to the Iowa, many miles to travel, mouths to feed, etc. But, just where are my tax dollars going??? Was the tourist fees going to repay this sum?

As to SF - that would have been a really neat and fitting tribute, given all the sailors that departed and then returned from that area, and tourist site there - when I visited SF this spring, that would have been high on my list of places to visit!

Doesn't make sense to me!

Or to Dianne Feinstein, I understand.

I read about this a few days ago, and was disgusted. I sent Senator Feinstein an email asking her to support Stockton's bid to get the Iowa. I told her that the Iowa should go where it and the men who served on her will be respected and honored. I sent the same email to my own senators, Durbin and Obama. I have not received a reply from either Durbin or Obama, but I did receive a reply from Senator Feinstein's office that was polite but which I interpreted to mean "you're not one of my constituents, so buzz off".

Assuming that the city supervisors are elected, this is surely just the embodiment of democracy. They must have the right to decide whether they want a battleship, which large sections of their city community may find distasteful, on the front.

Surely, she would be far better served by being in a city that wants her and will make appropriate arrangements for her?

Their reasons may be misguided, but to be honest it wouldn't matter if they just didn't like the colour , if the elected representatives have voted "no", then that is that. Vox populi....

Again, wouldn't a city where the ship is welcomed by the majority of citizens be a far better home?
