Wink Washington City Sets Nuclear-Free Policy
Another strange law! Who would the city be dealing with in the first place who would be involved with making nuclear weapons? Are they planning on weeding out terrorists this way! And wow....big fines if one is involved!!

Wednesday, August 24, 2005 1:42 p.m. ET

OLYMPIA, Wash. (AP) -- Washington state's capital city has banned anything related to nuclear weapons, a measure critics said could open the city to lawsuits.

The ordinance adopted by a 5-2 City Council vote Tuesday exempts the federal government and two major highways, Interstate 5 and U.S. 101, where such weapons or their components might be transported.

Violators will be fined $25 a day for the first offense, and $100 a day for a third.

The ordinance, which takes effect in 30 days, specifies that companies doing business with the city will be asked to affirm in writing that they are not involved in nuclear weapons production. The city will try to avoid doing business with companies that don't provide an affidavit.

Mayor Mark Foutch, one of the two dissenters, and other opponents said the measure will be hard to enforce and could result in costly lawsuits.

Supporters said it reflects community values in the liberal city.

That's werid! Who on earth came up with the idea for that law? I'd love to have been at that meeting! For a start; Don't they have better things to do? Secondly, does this law mean that hospitals etc will be fined?

As far as I know (this is a topic that interests me) there are no companies, worldwide, actively involved in the production of mukes. Governments, yes, private companies under government contract, possibly, but companies actively building nukes without government involvement? No, I doubt it very much!

So what about companies that are involved via government contract? What about people like General Electric, and Lockheed-Martin? They help make triton missiles to deliever the nukes, and I dare say they help to produce your current nukes in one way or another, does that mean the city won't do business with them?

Let's see--the communities values of a "liberal" city. I assume you can find pornogrophy, peep shows, abortion clinics, government supported half-way houses, free condum distribution and peddlers on every street corner, but no churches and no corporations anywhere unless half their profits go to support the ACLU, the NAACP, and the Green Party!
