tech wisdom for non tech-types [civdebs]
From http://forums.techguy.org/t399621.html

Defrag is moving all of your dirty clothes into the dirty clothes hamper, instead of spread anywhere on the carpet in your house that you can drop them.

Your pc, when you save a file, or when one is created, saves it anywhere on the hard disk, that it can 'throw' the 'dirty clothes' [file] without saving it on top of another file.

It's like you tossin' the dirty skivvies onto the floor randomly, and you cannot throw them onto other stuff.

Then, you cannot walk on any dirty laundry while you move about your house. You have to step between the clothes.

That's how the PC works. It slows down dodgin' the dirties. Defrag moves all the dirties into a 'pile'.

And remember, the hard disk has 'furniture', also, which won't hold the dirty laundry.

Anybody think of an analogy for the 'furniture'?

Now - how much laundry can pile up in 3 years???
