I'd answer your question but then you'd just call me Grumpy.

PS: I already did earlier.

And that is absolutely true no matter what Mike wants to do here. I frankly think he's over-reacting a bit--we've posted thousands of articles here without a problem and you had one person/entity complain and all they wanted was it removed. But then again its his site and he's the one that makes the rules.
What you said to Mr. Green makes sense. But I will be brief from now on.

I wrote a large article about the Iraq war a while ago (using reminiscences from a media perspective gleaned at the time of the first Gulf war of 91, and additional research). Hadn't written something for a while and a lot of people who suddenly remembered that this guy was around at that time, and - then - involved with a project with a mid-eastern angle, and were curious as to what opinions I might have had about the recent situation. I sent it to various people with an interest, NPR, and some anti-war people, and - yeah - it was used in paraphrased form in various places. It was written as a blog type piece or ezine article so those people I knew from my time as a journalist might see it.

Told you so.

For those who are wondering about what is appropriate, I have to say that I have dealt with this issue on The Motley Fool for years, as - of course - has everyone else who posts/posted there.

TMF has some well established guidelines pertaining to fair use, and I have continued to follow those guidelines in the posts I make on this site. So, for anyone who is interested, my posts that quote outside articles do so in a fashion that is generally accepted as fair use, and might therefore be taken for examples. That said, I haven't made that many posts that quote outside sources here, though there have been a few.

I think some of the more progressive sites are open to copying if we give credit where credit is due. Here's what American Progress had to say about their Reuse policy.

Re-use Policy

1. In General

A. License

You may copy, reprint, publish, reproduce, or otherwise display materials (excluding AP photos and cartoons) from the American Progress Action Fund on the condition that you attribute those materials to the American Progress Action Fund and provide a link to the website of the American Progress Action Fund (www.americanprogressaction.org). Specifically, any article or materials that you reprint or otherwise reproduce must be displayed with its by-line, if applicable, under one of the following headings:

"This material [article] was created by the American Progress Action Fund" (online)

"This material [article] was created by the American Progress Action Fund (www.americanprogressaction.org)" (print)

B. Special License for Progress Report

If the republished materials originally appeared in The Progress Report it must include a link to the Progress Report sign-up page (http://www.americanprogress.org/site...RJ8OVF&b=3750). Specifically it must be displayed with its by-line under one of the following headings:

"This material was created for the Progress Report, the daily e-mail publication of the American Progress Action Fund. Click here to subscribe." (online)

"This material was created for the Progress Report, the daily e-mail publication of the American Progress Action Fund. You can sign up online at www.progressreport.org." (print)

C. Copyright Protection

The materials produced by the American Progress Action Fund (including, but not limited to text, photographs, graphics, video and audio content) are protected by copyright as a collective work or compilation under the copyright laws of the United States and other countries. All individual articles, content and other elements comprising this compilation and produced by the American Progress Action Fund are also copyrighted works. You must abide by all additional copyright notices or restrictions contained in any materials produced by the American Progress Action Fund.

D. Limit on Use

Except as expressly permitted above, you may not copy, reproduce, distribute, publish, enter into a database, display, perform, modify, create derivative works, transmit, or in any way exploit any material produced by the American Progress Action Fund. Without limiting the generality of the foregoing, you may not distribute any material produced by the American Progress Action Fund over any network, including a local area network, nor sell or offer it for sale.

2. Editorial Changes Not Permitted

You may not make any editorial changes to articles or materials without first receiving express permission from the American Progress Action Fund. This provision does not restrict excerpting portions of content in a manner that does not alter the editorial intent.

3. Revocation in Place of Breach

If any of the terms of this agreement are breached, the American Progress Action Fund reserves the right to withdraw your license to republish our material. In this situation, you must take immediate steps to remove our material from all current and past communications.

Some emails that I get have a 'use' disclaimer on them too that permit the sharing or posting of the contents.

I don't understand the quandry here at all to be perfectly honest. Whether a copy-paste is legal or illegal is a minor point now, really. I would be more concerned with the intillectual bankruptcy displayed when someone simply repeats, verbatum, what someone else has said. I'm not talking about posting proof or source to back up an opinion. I'm talking about posting someone else's opinion to begin with. If you aren't going to speak your own mind, then why join a message board?

We'd better get that down in quotes coming from bassetman

Never know when we may need that kind of quote again
